Buy one, get a mate round to stand on the bottom. Youll use it elsewhere no doubt

This.

I saw them and immediately and very excitedly bought some. In practice, they are rubbish.

These, on the other hand, are brilliant.

Mine work fine , I used the baskets to start off with as that's all there was available , but they've never really worked that well in my experience . Make sure there's a decent fall on the gutter itself and the eave tile or slate delivers into the gutter properly and they work well .

I've fitted the Hedgehog things to try to keep leaves out of the downpipes, I'm not so bothered about the gutters getting blocked but when we moved in to our current house we had to have the soakaways dug up and all of the associated pipework flushed, that really was a pain (took the precaution of adding a sneaky connection to the foul drain at the same time, just in case).

I asked the window cleaner to do the gutters at the front of the house.

However, at the back of the ouse we have a veranda, so you can't get a ladder to the gutters. We will be replacing the vernada later this year, so while it is down, we will also replace the guttering etc. Would a hedgehog be the best bet to fit to the new guttering to keep it maintenance free?

Feed/Push a hose UP the pipe, you will be surprised how far up you can get it to go.

Ladder then hands, hand brush or gauging trowel, depending how bad they are.

Karcher underbody lance, with an extension kit - http://www.amazon.co.uk/K%C3%A4rcher-Extra-Angled-... + http://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B000KQGISC/ref=pd_lpo_s...

When stood on a step ladder, it is just long enough to reach over the top of the gutters and blast myself with stagnant water and dead leaves.

A good raincoat is also recommended.

Is the pressure a good idea on the unions?

Hasn't caused me any problems but it's more of a fast sweep along the length of the pipe to clear it out, than any sustained pressure to clean it to "as new".
