would you really want the same company that thinks its ok to do the first job in the way they did to come and fit a lintel for you?

That's one aspect. Another is would you be happy with the appearance of a concrete lintol in the external leaf here:-

OP said it as being rendered/plastered, so visual impact of a concrete lintol would not be an issue.

Judging by work so far I'd rather a concrete lintel than a steel one - with steel they'd need to re-build the brickwork on the front face above the bottom flange of the lintel, which wold no doubt be even worse than my attempt last year!

Lucky escape - I had the exact same thing at my place. Previous owner had had the load bearing timber window replaced with UPVC patio door. Installer used flat iron of similar section. The comments about brickwork cracking, door not opening weren't exaggerating. The brickwork bowed so much it had shifted outward ca.15mm at the base.

All replaced with rolled steel angle, decent bearings etc and a lot of bricks cleaned up and reused. Two years on, still good!
