Seems like a basic question, but I don't recall seeing a thread on it.
I'm just about to move, rental -> rental. Landed in this one with my entire life in the boot of my car (break ups and stuff).

On that basis, can we try to establish a complete list of all jobs which need doing, pre, during and post move?

http://www.bbc.co.uk/homes/property/moving_checkli... & http://www.helpiammoving.com/moving_house/checklis... will probably help. Don't forget to change addresses on places like Amazon, Ebay and Paypal if you use them. I would also definitely pay for a royal mail redriect service these days.

Make sure you notify your landlord correctly and you attend the final check out inspection. FWIW I paid for a professional clean of my old place, at approx £200 it was half the deposit value and got my full deposit back without any trouble.

In my new place I tried to change straight to a cheap energy supplier, but had to set an account up with the current one first until the change could be enacted, which took about 6 weeks.

Make sure you take pictures of everything in the rental property you're leaving, showing condition, cleanliness etc. so when the scummy estate agents come calling for your deposit you have evidence to show how you left the property.

Royal Mail redirect is advisable but be warned they're very sloppy, change addresses pronto and don't rely on it, apart from the not inconsiderable % they generally miss they completely just "forgot" about one of mine after about a month.
