Hey folks,

we have a run of about 20 meters of grass verge about 0.75m wide, it keeps getting driven on and when it rain it gets pretty muddy.

I spoke to roads (scotland) and they say that as we are not in a 30mph I cannot build a kerb! So what can I do?

I have seen 50mm or so stones used but open to suggestions from anyone in a similar situation!

ps sorry this from my ipad and its the correct way on the device but not here

A few big rocks (eg 1' cubes) will keep them off and look nice too.

Perhaps a daft question, why does it get driven on when there's a perfectly good road (one assumes)?

I'd not drive on a verge unless there was a access/width problem.

Of course you can install a kerb.

Splay kerbs are for high speed rural roads, they have a 45degree profile and are perfect for the job.

If you own it you can do what you wish within reason ... nice big boulders and a couple of sacrificial posts with reflectors either end sounds like a plan then

As per my question above - seems like you're trying to treat the symptoms...

I'd do this. Seen it done near me in a few places.

I would check with Highways how close you can put things to a public highway. Here in France it is 1 metre, that is to allow them to mow and helps visibility for traffic.
You could just leave it as it has no benefit to you anyway apart from looking nice out side your boundary wall.

My mate had the same problem, lives RIGHT next to the sea except for this lane his house is on - we winched up some big rocks from the beach, painted them white, and no problems since.

Could you get a contractor to paint an edge defining white line along there?

Looking at the picture, I very much doubt whether you do.
You may own the solum (the land beneath what is there) but usually responsibility for the verge is the responsibility of the Roads Authority. The adopted road (which the Roads Authority are responsible for) usually consists of the tar surface and the verges either side either to a fixed boundary or for a prescribed distance back from the roadside, whichever is nearest (in your case, probably the wall). Most Councils are happy to shrug off responsibility for verges if they think someone else such as the neighbouring landowner will pick it up but if you ask to see their adopted roads register, you should be able to get a definitive answer.
Saying that, if you get it in writing from them that it is yours to do with as you wish (to protect yourself for the future) you can do all sorts to stop people driving on it. I had similar a few years ago and levelled the ground off and parked a few antique agricultural implements along it right up to the road edge. As well as stopping people parking there, it also made most slow down as they passed the house as they didn't want a scrape along the side of their car from an old plough.

thanks for all the feedback, I contacted the council because I wanted to fit kerb as it seemed the most sensible option however they said that it is not a 30mph that if someone hit the kerb and flipped the car it would be my fault which is an interesting comment! I guess I will look into boulders painted white etc however they IMO look a bit rubbish and are a pain to cut the grass around!

I don't see why you can't leave them rock colour, though I agree you'd need to strim round them sometimes.

My brother made "bollards" by using a bucket as a mould, some concrete, painted white - seem to work quite well.

Can be seen here
