Japanese knotweed and Roundup stump killer.
Discussion
Don't panic. We had a fairly serious outbreak in the meadow adjoining our street. Some guys clearing out a bunny told us what we had. The meadow is owned by the street jointly. We had several very well established plants about 6ft high.
I ordered loads of Rosate 36 off eBay. You can get it in 5L containers.
The trick is to spray the foliage while it is growing strongly and very leafy. That way it is absorbed in to the plant right down to the roots.
I just kept spraying twice a week. The plants all died.
The following year a few small new plants popped up about 10m from the original plants. I let them come in to full leaf and then followed the same routine. These small plants died very quickly.
That was about 5 years ago and we've seen no knotweed since. I'm quite paranoid and carry out frequent checks.
Don't ever chop the plants down. Any small cuttings will grow! Poison is the only answer. It takes dedication but it's possible to do it yourself.
Wear gloves and keep Rosate off your skin. It's been linked to Alzheimer's which is why there are calls for it to be banned.

No there's not! That was organophosphates and whatever other st they used back in the 1970s.Glysophate (Rosate, Clinic Ace, Gallup, Roundup etc) is pretty non toxic to humans. The issues around banning it are (IMO) nonsense and based on very very dubious science. That said, as with any chemical, sensible precautions should be taken, and gloves are sensible. But if you do get some on your skin, just wash it off and dont worry about it, it wont kill you.
Do nothing. If the stem is wilting and the leaves are dead there wont be much/any transpiration which is needed to move the chemical down to the root system. You can inject if you want, but it'll be a waste of chemical, as it wont move around the plant.
Sounds like you've done what you can for now. Just leave it to die off, or when you see new growth then hit it again.
