FTB mortgage declined - what next!?

HSBC: a few years ago they refused to let me open a current account - a current account, no overdraft, nothing at all - just a current account. Evidently I'd failed the credit check despite my rating being excellent, several hundred thousand in equity on my house, good wage, no bad history whatsoever. Very odd.
