I can highly recommend Dunlopillo Latex Mattresses. Not cheap, I think ours was circa £2,000 10 years ago, but it's the best mattress I've ever slept on. When I've been away, I always look forward to my first night back my own bed. Our sits on a wooden slatted frame. However, the bed frame needs to be strong as the mattress is very heavy.

Had one of those in my last rented flat. Yes, very comfy but I would wake up in a puddle of sweat. Landlady insisted on it as they don't harbour bugs and what not.

I had to stick it under the bed and use my Hypnos.

i can swear by cheap IKEA foam mattresses. i've had expensive mattresses, mid-range, memory foam etc.. and then (almost) accidentally had an ikea one... even got one in the spare room now too and everyone who stays has commented on how comfy the bed is.
This.

We have Feather & Black and ones from Laura Ashley - both are very good (LA ones include toppers). The FB one we have has 13,000 springs in it I think. You can buy ones from FB with varying numbers of springs. You can also order them with different levels of support on the LHS and RHS of the bed in case you prefer varying levels of firmness/softness. Both can be used on wooden/metal slatted bed frames.

John Lwis let you fly theirs for a month, if you don't like it, you can back it.

Can any of these suggested mattresses work on a wooden frame slatted bed?
Our ViSprung is on slats, you just need to make sure the slats are not too wide apart, if they are you can put some board on them, but most should be ok. You then need a cover on the bottom of the mattress, ViSprung make one. But any will do

I spent a long long time researching mattresses and finding one that balanced price with budget.

Anyway we went for a John Ryan by Design Artisan mattress.

I highly recommend them as they will make exactly what you want and consult you on the best way forward. You don't pay for showrooms etc and it is made in the UK. I would compare them to higher end of the mattress world but at around half the price. It is like being in a 5 star hotel every night (buy the best linen you can)

John Lewis, get yourself to a flagship store and take an afternoon (at least) work through the different mattresses. Just warn your wife of the budget first ;-)
Don't go on someone elses recommendation, one mans skoda...

IKEA used to do a cracking memory foam double for about 400 quid, but like everything decent they don't stock anymore. Best memory for the price, loads better than my parents mega expensive tempur.
