Appreciate the input fellas. Once I'm in and I've got to understand the plot in more depth I'll make a decision. I think the current owners take a mini tractor in there and have made it easier to do so. Depends what I want to do with it, if I'm going to put in more beds/expand them then it could make things trickier.

Having had a good look it's clearly more like a third of an acre, probably more, dam estate agents!

I'm under no illusion about it being more fun on a ride on, spent years with them previously so I'll treat it as a tool. Cheers

I've got something like a third of an acre of lawn.

I went on eBay and bid for a 10yr old Torro mower which looked tidy and looked-after. I got it for £500 or so and it's been great for the last 4 years. Easy to service, deck belt changed, parts and maintenance booklet off internet. As others have said it's much easier to motivate yourself to a weekly/10 day cut with a ride-on.

I don't need a perfect finish, just want to keep things tidy because kids are playing football, water fights, badminton etc anyway. Lawn goes to big ash tree in middle distance and then behind house and partly back down behind where the photo is taken:

The thing is that with a cheap trailer, (this one cost me nothing more than a tin of Hammerite and some new wheelbarrow wheels) they're so handy for moving stuff around.

So I reckon if you're a bit undecided, try a half decent 2nd hand one, it won't be difficult to sell on whether you settle for a walk-along mower or a better new one.

Another vote for Hayter 56, we have one but haven't used it since we had the ride on.

I've got a countax a2050. Good piece of kit, does about 1.25 acres in an hour with the mulching deck on. I've got a normal deck as well with powered collector. One piece of advice I would pass on is go for the mulching deck if you can only have one, it's quicker and easier in my experience.

Agree they can be a bit of a faff if they play up, but I don't think I'd be anywhere near as quick with a non ride on. I'd debate it at less than a third of an acre though.

I bought mine used, I imagine if you bought a used one to try if you don't like it you can sell at minimal if any loss.

Try a mtd sprinto or a yardman dx70. I got one for my dad last year to go along side his self propelled mower.

I use a cub cadet with a 42" deck on my homestead. Ability to tow small utility trailers and mount a snow plough. Most riding mowers have hit and miss reliability.

Newer John Deere and Craftsman mowers are not significantly better than the cheaper brands.

As an interim measure a mate has offered to lend me his petrol driven regular mower, think this will tell me all I need to know in the interim!

Honda ride ons look a pretty good bet at the mo.

Cheers

I've owned 5 acres or more for about 25 years I should think.... so a serial ride on owner! The Honda I have now is far better than any of the others I've owned.

As you say, see how you get on with the regular before biting the bullet.

Yes to a tractor mower, its the PH way. We moved house last year and my only regret is on missing out on 2 older houses that could have justified one. As it is, we moved into a house with a garden that could be done with an electric mower frown
