Hi All,

I had haemerrhoids last year which was treated by sclerotherappy.

Looks like they've returned and I've got the ball rolling to address this again.

However, the worst thing was the enema, which hurted like hell. Is there an alternative to an enema? In addition, I went to the loo and had nothing to eat after, when I had the treatment done, so all that came out was watr!

Thanks for any advice!

I thought laxative would be one?

Would I need an enema if I use the loo before I go anyway? It was pointless last time.

Laxitive would clean the big bits out but you will need the enema to wash the walls so to speak hurl

Try some laxitive before you go for the enema and it might not hurt quite so much if there is not much left

I had an enema for a flexible sigmoidoscopy but the overture for each of my colonoscopies was a laxative. In each case, it was the dreaded Picolax.

I had a colonoscopy a couple of motnhs ago.

I was given a diet to follow for 5 days that basically backed you up, then had to drink 2.5l of a liquid called Kleanprep on Sunday eve, then another 2.5l on Mon am, before the test on Mon pm.

That Kleanprep stuff, you gotta be near a stter once the first litre's inside you!! It's then "straight through processing" of liquid>guts>toilet bowl for the rest of the time you have it. Once it's empty, you're CLEAN!

Worked though; the exam itself was pretty easy after the liquid!

You can a) ask if you can do oral prep instead which arguably sucks less but for longer, and may not be an option for various reasons, b) see if there's a different sort of enema that's less vile available eg saline rather than phosphate (it exists but may not be effective enough) or c) depending on exactly what hurt, ask for a painkilling/numbing lubricant (the one they use for catheterisation has a lot of lidocaine in it).

Best of luck.

I had my colonoscopy while I was studying at university. Rather ironically, I missed a lecture on fibre-optics!

I was given two small bottles of something or other and told to fast for 24 hours and drink plenty of water. Every time I drank a pint of water there was a short delay before it came straight out the other end. By the time I went to hospital I was as clean as a whistle - the chap doing the examination noted as such.

I was semi-sedated and it was fairly painless; there were only a couple of uncomfortable moments while he negotiated a couple of hairpin bends.

After an hour or so recovery the nurse brought me a cup of tea and two slices of the world's best and tastiest toast. My wife collected me from hospital and asked what I wanted for dinner. "Just take me to the nearest takeaway, and step on it!"

I had Moviprep which is like Picolax. Not anywhere near as bad as predicted. The procedure was easy and the doc said the bowel prep was perfect.

Have had plenty of colonoscopies, but never had an enema as part of the prep.
Always picolax.

Now whenever someone offers me water with lemon I get flashbacks.... wobble

You could always go for a private colonic session at a local spa that offers them - may well be gentler than the medical version. Personally have never had them hurt.

The OH had a colonoscopy last Sunday morning. She was sent the Klean-Prep to use on the Saturday. What has been said previously is correct.
1st drink at 2pm and by 3pm (1st Litre drunk) she was heading to the toilet. It was my job to supply her with a glass of this potion every 15 minutes. She eventually got back of the pan at 6.30pm. After this time what went in came back out looking just the same.
Klean-Prep does as it says on the packet.

This, I have only had an enema for a sigmoidoscopy. For a colonoscopy it is moviprep.
Picolax seems to be on the way out at my local hospital.

I had Movieprep too. Not unpleasant but not welcome either especially when you have to drink it a litre at a time - twice!
Brain says you've got to, body says it would rather not.

I've got a colonoscopy next month, and I have been given a nasty packet containing two doses of Picolax to take. Not looking forward to it.

It's really not as bad as people make out.

Just try to keep to the diet sheet they give you, the less you eat the less there is to come out.
