evening. so I'm 20 years old, I've had my license 7 months and I'm trying to get insurance on my 1.8 litre mx5 2002. All i can find are daft quotes for like 5k. ANYONE have any ideas on how i can lower this. willing to pay about 2k or does anyone have an experience with such an issue

- use all comparison sites
- try insurers that are not part of comparison sites
- try insurers that specialise in young drivers/performance cars (like adrian flux)
- play around between fully comp/tptf on all the above
- play around between your excess, higher = lower insurance, lower = higher insurancee. be sure you understand what voluntary/compulsory excess means
- check what addons are included in the price and decide if you want it or not in order to save money (such as break down cover, courtesy car).
- if you can afford it, paying in full is cheaper then monthly.

beyond that the quotes you get are the quotes you're going to get, pay it or buy something else and wait till you're older.

there are generic tips on insurance which you can google.

bear in mind that insurance is largely down to each individual, one person saying 'i got a cheap quote from 'x' doesn't mean you will.

Just a thought, but if there's an owners' club they may have a tie up with an insurance company?

Lancaster Insurance do an MX5 scheme but it will be your age and lack of experience that are the issues. Specialist companies usually like 12 months + experience of sports cars to give good quotes

I'm not surprised. They flat out refused to give me a quote on my Clio.

Try greenlight am 23 but 6 years driving 600 quid. But with not even a years experience a mx5 is going to be expensive. Even at my age I could run far more powerful cars than the mx5 for the same price. Unfortuently the drift scene has come in and put a huge warning mark for youngsters driving mx5.

Forget Adrian Flux, never had a good quote from them yet.

Elephant/Admiral have always given me decent quote.

I suggest you put the MX5 in storage and get something boring until you get a year or two no-claims bonus.
