I don't usually get involved with these, as they drive me mad. Mrs does it.

However, she's just flagged something up that has lit a flame.

May-June used 85 units of gas £95.

June - July used 48 units of gas £81 .... WTF !

Carol Vordermaan I'm not, but that's taking the right Royal piss, yes?

We'd need more details to answer.

What is your standing charge and unit rate?

When you say units do you mean actual KWh or just the numbers off the meter? If you mean numbers off the meter then is your meter an m3 or ft3 meter?

If you're standing charge for 2 months is say, £70, then you have used £25 and £11 of gas. As above, need to know tariff.

First, what's the bill actually say? They don't just pluck figures out of thin air.

Second, is the bill an estimate, but your "usage" a real measurement? (or, wasthe previous bill an estimate...?)

Third, have you 'fallen off the end' of a fixed rate tariff, and they've stuffed you back onto a highly uncompetitive 'standard tariff' - This happened to us with NPower recently - most unpleased frown

I've just switched to pay as you go meters for this very reason. I went from a large house with two occupants being heated in winter, to a tiny terraced house with one occupant in summer and my utility bills doubled. I had a £68 bill and £56 of that was refunded because I'm in the house so little.

Before I had read the whole of your post Npower came into my head, especially the bit about plucking figures out of thin air. God awful company

You do realise that PAYG meters are significantly more expensive, and, dare I say it, just a little bit council?

I'd be ashamed to have to ask the cashier in a petrol station / corner shop to stick a tenner on my plastic key of shame.

89p a unit?! It's normally charged for by the KWh. In fact I've never seen an energy bill that doesn't break the gas bit down into KWh.

If you're on a ft3 meter, then 1 "unit" equates to, very roughly, 33KWh, so does your bill actually show about 2.69p/KWh?

Correct . My simple maths is of I've used nearly half the amount of units, why is there so little difference in the bills ?

Beyond the total figure, have you actually *read* the bills?

Nope, but I'm going to. Because I'm being fleeced, it's annoying.

Quite a significant proportion of your bill is fixed by the daily standing charge.

I'd suggest you just post a picture of the page where the maths is done and I can check it if you want. I'll be staggered if it's wrong.

The readings from the bill are in my 1st post. Units are meter readings.

Looking at my bill from July to August, I used 18 units of gas (201 kWh) at a cost of £4.23 plus a standing charge of .25p a day making a total of £11.98.

Multiply the gas usage by 3 to get close to your usage (making 54 units) then add on the standard charge would make a total of £20.44.

So you have:
a) Something(s) in your house that consume a lot of gas.
b) A seemingly high cost tariff compared to mine.

If you want to be less 'fleeced', get the details of your annual consumption in kWh, put them into the various comparison sites and see how it compares to your current deal. Repeat at least once a year.

this

like many things these days, there is little to be gained for loyalty, especially in the world of utilities......last year we moved to Ovo....this year it is sse - plenty of comparison sites to help you find the best deal.

Of course, if something is "mis-reading" the numbers (bad meter, or rogue appliance causing excess consumption), then moving won't solve it....

I've used about 25 units of gas in two albeit warm summer months which is still ridiculously cheap.

Which is bit strange as i'm on the top up meter rather than bill.

I did splash out on a top of the range boiler last year so it could be that it's just very efficient.

Was the bill just scrawled on the back of an envelope and pushed under the door?

Read the damn bill PROPERLY please. If it still doesn't make sense to you, post a redacted screenshot.
