Well

We got it

I now have a pool problem to deal with!

If we delete the plan will be underground rainwater storage (house is water metered and we like our garden + car washing) and probably a ground source heat collector array in readiness for future underfloor heating.

I'll probably attempt it myself after due research, it must be easy enough to hire some concrete smashing equipment and pour on the topsoil for under £10k ...

Purchase has just fallen apart because the sellers are refusing to move out, so we're into year 3 of the house hunt, which will also involve a high stakes gamble on what schools we get allocated or involve moving our eldest mid year. We're out of pocket by 4 figures, probably 5 if interest rates go up. A little bit furious.

That's usually a fairly basic requirement for a house sale. Commiserations.

Sorry to hear that OP, what are the sellers thinking!? They can't find a place but refuse to move into rented?

Quick suggestion without a single clue or knowledge on the laws and regulations; can you find a local builder/building project that would otherwise need to pay to have earth/concrete removed and offer to let them fill the pools for free?

...or just become a prolific local fly tipper in your own back garden?!

Scaffold inside the pool, lay scaffold boards and plywood on top then lay some lazy lawn, no pool and also no mowing, has to be a win win.
And when the pool fills with brackish stinking water?

I'd be interested to know how this came about - presumably you don't market your house and agree a sale if you are not prepared to move out! Did they want a crazy completion date that screwed the chain?

We just had the same. All ready to go but vendors unwilling to move into rented as they'd only ever lived in two houses and had never rented and saw it as 'a waste of money'. The £10k reduction in my offer followed by the threat to withdraw completely unless we moved by a set date got them to understand the consequences of their actions but I can imagine it happens a lot, especially for downsizers like ours who also have to get their heads around quickly getting rid of a lifetimes' worth of accumulated belongings and the emotions of moving on from their family home.
