Garage wall construction

I have planning in for a 5.5x5.5m detached garage with a 3.6m roller door to the front and a single composite door to the side,

I was all set on building it with a standard 300mm block-cavity-brick wall however I'm really considering just a single leaf with pillars and a 9" wall to the front and rear purely on cost saving reasons

Has anyone on here done this and regretted it?

Realistically I won't be spending masses of time in there so I'm sure it'll be suitable however I really don't think it's going to save much money overall especially as the inn will be block and maby an extra two of three days labour?

What would you do?

I built my workshop with single leaf outer walls to obtain maximum space, but regret it now and am planning to built an insulated cavity and thermolite inner leaf to try and retain a little more heat... waste of time if you arent intending spendign any time in there though to be honest.

While you're doing this for warmth do you feel that the double skin wall is better for condensation or is that more down to having adequate ventilation?

I think condensation is always down to adequate ventilation especially if youre heating the place. We also have 3 rooms above to consider, which although already insulated below the floor would also benefit a little - heat and outdoor noise.
If I do go down the heated route ( I have pipes in place already to tap into and the boiler is in there anyway) I would also have to go down the route of installing a set of bi fold doors behind my roller shutter on the inside....... but its taken me several years to get this far and have had 2 pallets of porcelain tiles sitting waiting to be laid for over 12 months now...

Yes, I wish I'd gone for block-insulation-brick in mine.

I've got a double detached garage (built with the house in '87, not by me) which is as you describe, single skin with pillars at corners and wall mid points - it's still standing!

Of course, the garage just houses the random crap we deem too good to throw away, but not good enough to make it into the house.

Basically it'll cost around £2 per block

Does the saving matter to you ?

Do you need every inch of space ?

Will you ever want to convert it ?
