It is going on my sixth night homeless. I say homeless, I have shelter - that of cheap hotels - but it's proving difficult to secure fixed accommodation. I've considered flats, terraced homes and house shares, but a common trend is so called agents/landlords complicating agreements by insisting on intrusive checks. I am simple man in terms of, you are providing a service, I have the funds, lets make a deal. By principle I will not consent to checks so I'm limited. I'm not going to jeopardize my identity by providing my NI number, 'next of kin' (of which I have non), my work details, line manager identity, bank balance or bank details to facilitate as such, or tell a stranger my annual income, even my name is non of anyone's business frankly - this is all before forking out unrealistic rent prices for the most depressing of abodes imaginable.

Not really sure what to do now. I've just turned 31, no family, no friends or ties of any kind, I am a civil engineer by education and trade - out of contract currently so, 'unemployed'. To my name I have a £1500 car, a car jam packed full of belongings and about £24000 in the bank. No real interest in travelling as I couldn't justify spending that sort if money, but I guess I am truly free but lacking ideas.

Looking for some pointers, words of wisdom or general noise to give me advice or inspiration? Somewhat directionless at this point.

Sleep in the car, or compromise your ridiculous principles, and submit to checks before the nice landlord person gives you access to his >£100000 asset.

Buffoon.

With plenty of money in the bank go and stay in a hotel or bed and breakfast establishment.
Once that immediate need is sorted look elsewhere for a more permanent place to live.

I don't mean to sound unkind but the reason you are homeless is because you are bizarrely protective of information that nobody else but you really cares about. Simply pass on that information and enjoy access to any number of properties. Problem solved.

Barmy!
Would you give the keys to your car to a total stranger, not knowing if they were a mad speeder, drunk, or could even actually drive?
Now imagine a landlord doing similar to his assets worth 100 times,or more,as much! For all they know, you could be a serial arsonist just out of jail.
Seriously, this info is perfectly usual to give, no one is going to steal your identity/soul.

Yes, you are. So, that's the problem sorted, what about the solution? Wonder what it could possibly be.

I am a bit confused OP you say you won't give your details to people who have a legitimate need to know. How else are they going to do checks on you? you may not like it but, it is called due diligence. But here is my big concern you put how much you have in the bank and what your car is worth on an open forum.

Whilst I would give people who need to know my bank details etc I certainly would never put how much money I have in the bank (it's not a great deal in any case) on an open forum.

To be honest I think you need to consider your priorities.

If you check the free ads then I should imagine you'll find plenty of accommodation for rent on a private basis. I hope your standards are low though - many cash in hand type landlords are pretty unscrupulous!

Or accept that decent landlords cannot be expected to hand over the keys to their often lovely and indeed valuable properties to people they do not know, without attempting to mitigate their risk. You would at least have your interests protected too by going down this (utterly conventional) route.

Without wishing to be unkind, your post makes me think that you have issues other than accommodation to address.

Plenty of 'rent a room' places out there. Just offer three months upfront and I'm sure most would be happy.

Stay in a cheap hotel, get another job, then buy your own house.

Though this idea unravels when to get a mortgage you'll have to provide details of your employment, salary etc. So it's either stay in the car, or recalibrate I think. We are but pawns.

How about doing a Ben Fogle and living in the jungle somewhere?

There's obviously some reason why the OP doesn't want his background looked into, so needs to find a way forward while keeping his past to himself. This doesn't in any way make him a buffoon etc.

Gumtree, we tell our prospective tenants who fail to try Gumtree lots of landlords self managing who make no checks.

As an agent we have a duty of care to the landlords to find out about the tenant and his ability to pay and financial history. If we say you look like a decent chap, we won't run any checks and it goes bad who do you think the landlord will blame
