Hi All,

We're hopefully moving house in the new year (thanks Sarnie) and are looking at removals costs

We're in the Newbury area, have a 2.5 bed house currently (with a reasonable amount of stuff, but not excessive), and to move 20miles we've just had a quote at £1850 and another at £2400.

How does this tally with what others have paid? It feels very vry expensive to us.

there's nothing odd about our house, access is very good at both locations, we will be moving mid-week with no deadlines (we're coming out of rented so there will be overlap between the houses)

Many thanks

J

We moved only 2 miles but from a 5 bed (near Alton , Hants) and paid £1300, that was August this year. That included packing all breakables (inc all kitchen) and dismantling / reassembling beds as well as a lot of outside/ shed/ workshop/ garden stuff.

£1700 for us in April to move 4 bed with a lot of extra stuff (spare wheels, roll cage, 2 bbq, garden table etc etc). Was a move of 400yds but I don't think distance effects costs too much. That was for them to pack it all and provide boxes...

Broaden your services area - ie look for a removal firm from further afield - perhaps they charge more in the Newbury area then perhaps Andover?

Also depends how much stuff you have in each room. Big differences between the two quotes you have though - no chance of doing it yourself over a few weekends, then hiring a big lorry?

Much more fun.

We recently moved contents of 3 bed house, 1 mile, cost £700 and they were fantastic. This was Fleet area. Think we had 5 quotes, from £700 to £1,300. Interestingly, the cheapest also got the best reviews on a local Facebook group so we went with them and it was a painless experience.

As mentioned, I don't think distance is a big issue as most of the time/effort is loading and unloading.

We recently moved 60 miles. 2 bed house but a lot of crap, removals firm brought a 7.5 tonner removal van plus a luton from London to Essex and we paid £1300. This was with a BAR registered firm and included insurance for goods in transit plus 'waiting' insurance. Absolute top blokes as well.

Avoid the nationals like Pickfords and the like as they charge silly prices.

Then we're just brilliant. 3 bed to a 4 bed cost £750 and I couldn't fault them.

Just to buck the trend... I have accepted a quote for movers for a four bedroom house for £380 (although in a cheap part of the country).

I used these guys

At lot less than that to pack & move 75 miles from Berks to Dorset, their big van absolutely full.
