I am sorting out the kitchen in my nephews first house and wanted to find out what the latest thinking is on wall coverings behind the hob. He has chosen tiles for under the cupboards but we are unsure whether to tile behind the hob up to the extractor or fit a steel splashback as people have been doing for the last few years. What is the current trend?

Personaly feel that it doesn't matter what the trend is, it depends on what 'look' you are trying to create, and what goes with what you have already, and of course what your nephew likes.

Take a look at Glass splashbacks or led backlit glass splashbacks too.

Glass for me - natural very pale green/blue colour.

Steel always looks like a chipshop to me.

Then tell him to head to the newsagents and get a copy of 'Kitchens, Bedrooms and Bathrooms' magazine.

I found a steel splashback horrible to keep looking clean and would not use another.

Tiles are a pain to clean too, tomato in the grout etc

Glass looks really nice.

If you went for tile how high up would you tile?

I know a splashback would normally come up to the height of pic 2 but im thinking 3 if tiled?

I think it depends on the colour of the tiles and units.

Tiles are very last century.

The latest thinking is antique glass.

I always tiled to the bottom of the hood - to prevent cooking residue staining the wall.

I've just fitted a stainless splashback to mine though - to the top of the cupboards - because I felt it needed brightening up.

The tiles he has chosen are like huge metro tiles in a light blue and the units are cream with a black granite worktop

Tiles are this kind of size - http://www.toppstiles.co.uk/tprod46180/attingham-s...

Nope, making your own antique glass is definitely the way to go. You'll increase your net uncle worth no end, all you have to do is watch a couple of Youtube videos... and work out how the hell you can strip the backing off a piece of new mirror.
