There were no barbs or anything to grip the pipe when it is in the fitting. I couldn't figure it out until I had another look at some spare elbow fittings. The moveable collar had the barbs that grip the pipe. I though as it was getting dark and I was pissed off as I hate not fixing stuff myself I levered the collar out and popped it in the grey fitting, hey presto it works and I can now hook the washing machine up.
Just in time to install the dishwasher for a large dinner party on new years.
Thanks again mate, really appreciate the effort.

I would just goto wicked and buy a JG Speedgit one with the collar - either there is something wrong with that one or quite possibly it's missing a part.
No: you still need to think about isolating all the outside pipes very well, and accepting you may not be able to use the washing machine if it's sub zero for a couple of days...

Thanks for the suggestion. All working as it is mentioned to now. First wash under my gypsy belt. No: you still need to think about isolating all the outside pipes very well, and accepting you may not be able to use the washing machine if it's sub zero for a couple of days...
Made the mistake of putting the waste lower than the drum and it constantly syphonin the water and never starting. Live and learn.
I think you are right about isolation. I have lagged everything but cant' drain it. So fingers crossed it stays warmish for the lagging and shed to stave off the worst or the rest of winter.
