It is, but it doesnt really matter unless all your seed gets washed away in the rain. Actually that happened to me last year. When it warms up next week it should be ok. 2 weeks I reckon to see the first shoots in current weather.

I'm more concerned of the predicted frost in the next few days - but then only if the seed has germinated. But I've got a carrier bag full left just in case wink

I hired an aerator (hollow tine) last weekend and spent a couple of hours pushing the machine up and down the front and back lawns. Had to look up the instructions on the interweb first but once I'd got the hang of it all was good.

Cleared up a few of the pellets but got bored of raking them up so have just left them now.

Next up is Iron Sulphate followed by fertiliser then seed later on.
How much did that cost if you dont mind me asking?

It was £117 for a full weekends hire from HSS Hire in Woking.

We were planning on iron sulphate to kill the moss and overseed but the moss is 3 inches thick and it's a case of spot the blade of grass. Another issue is we used to cheap patch filler stuff and it turns out to be the worst grass going. It's all stalks when mowed so this needs killing and reseeding, weeds galore to.

Which chemical do i need to kill everything.

How long do we wait before reseeding.

What nutrition to i add to the soil before seeding.

Roundup/Glysophate is the chemical you want. Takes a week or 2 to die down, then you'll have to turn the soil over to bury the weeds and moss before reseeding. No need for any nutrients, unless you want to put a general NPK fertiliser down, but not many would.

Cut the lawn this morning then thought I would give it a rake but gave up after about 10 minutes as it was hard going....had a look at one of these raker/scarifiers today and it seems to get good reviews - any thoughts?

Cheers reading up glysolphate doesn't kill moss and it's moss heavy so may do the iron sulphate and get rid of the moss then do glysolphate to kill what's left.

There's a 60quid one in Lidl if you're quick. Probably a similar quality, healthy warranty.

About to move house next week and from what I've seen during the visits I've made the garden is mostly moss not grass. It's approaching an acre so I'm reluctant to kill it all off and start again so I'll be looking in on this thread frequently. Guess I'll start with the moss-kill, scarify, aerate, over-seed routine and see what happens thi year. I'll pop up some pictures in a week or so biggrin

ok, so i need quite a bit of help.
we moved into this house last year, and did very little in the garden, mainly due to our little one coming along.
i now want to turn the area in the pictures into lawn,

so what on earth do i do?
area is small, 4mx5.5m
so far my thinking is lift the slabs/clear the weeds.
dig a couple of trenches and put some gravel in to aid drainage
dig over and profile with a slight gradient towards the path
lay turf

soil is a mix of old compost, topsoil and clay.
any help much appreciated.

cheers
craig

I did the same at our first house, lifted slabs, dug down to 6 inches, hardcore, gravel, but of sand and then top soil followed by turf

I'm no expert but it grew like buggery lol

Anyone with a lidl scarifier can you help.

Just come to put mine together and one of the bars that should slot into the machine is thin not round. As per below. Anyone else had this and if so how does it go together.

The part with the flat bits on either side join the top handle part to the lower part, use the square headed nuts with the red plastic bits to bolt them together.

I used mine today fir the 1st time it's certainly taken a lot out of the lawn.

Had my first real go at the lawn this year. Last summer was all about getting rid of the jungle/moss left by the previous owners. This year I want it looking good!

Scarified and treated with ferous sulphate. Will scarifying again next week end and then weed killer soon after. Then overseed in late April.

If any of this sounds wrong, please let me know!

Yep done that but the two poles that go into the actual machine, 1 is flat the other round so I think maybe it's been done in manufacturing. Other then this issue it's bloody brilliant! My lawn isn't a lawn anymore.

Oh wow! I don't feel so bad about how mine looks after i did a few patches with a handheld fork/rake thing. I need to get some lawn weed killer, all i have at the moment is weed and feed and then i can get onto re seeding.
