Cut the lawn this morning then thought I would give it a rake but gave up after about 10 minutes as it was hard going....had a look at one of these raker/scarifiers today and it seems to get good reviews - any thoughts?

There's a 60quid one in Lidl if you're quick. Probably a similar quality, healthy warranty.http://www.diy.com/departments/mac-allister-msrp18...

I ended up getting the one from BQ and I've been really impressed. I picked it up yesterday morning and set to work using the rake attachment which after two passes removed about 3-4 bins worth of thatch. I gave up with the collector bucket as it was filling up every few metres though.
Solid effort, reminds me of me last year! Keep it regularly but lightly watered. I think the weather is pretty much on your side. Post up the results.markbigears said:
Scarifiers are excellent, but so irritating. Get about 3 foot and then have to stop and empty the damn thing, or use it with no box and have it fling moss and chaff 6 foot in the air as you walk into it, and then have to rake it all up anyways! After my efforts this weekend I'm up to 4 big black sacks so far, and I've only done about 1/4 of the garden. The first year I did it a few years back I pulled out 21 full, compressed, black bin bags.
I've just ordered up some more Ferrous Sulphate moss killer powder and a tub of lawn fertiliser. I'll give the lawn a spray of a that combined in a week or so to make sure and kill off any moss bits left and give the grass a boost.
Then I have to move onto the OH's lawn at her house which has so much moss in it it's like walking on a mattress. I am NOT looking forward to that.
8-P, I had a leccy flymo lawn rake 3400 for a couple of seasons, I was very impressed with it.
Even though I only use it once a year, upgrading to a decent petrol job does 2 things.
1) it's a lot faster and 2) the blades actually goes sub soil breaking the surface up.
Bought this high end one (retail 1k), hardly used for £180 on eBay.

I made a start on my parents lawns at the weekend, by putting some moss killer on them. The plan is that I will rake the moss out next week. I can't decide if it is worth hiring a scarifier for 15m² of lawn, or if I should man up and rake by hand.
For 15m2, It'll take you longer to go and pick the scarifier up from the hire place than to just do it yourself with a rake!BlueHave said:
Scarified mine a few weeks back, then moss killer. Heavy clay soil so decided today would be the day to aerate it before raking and reseeding.
Used a fork to do 20sqm by hand, so lets just say i've done my monthly workout
Backbreaking work
Not to make you hate yourself but for £20 you could of saved yourself some time. Used a fork to do 20sqm by hand, so lets just say i've done my monthly workout

Hmmm, scarifying. Ive got a 1/3rd acre to do.
I can find tow along scarifyiers, but that just leaves a mess. I can buy a sweeper, but i cant buy a sweeper with a scarifyer or any kind of collection device. Agrifab USED to make a scarifyer you could attache to the front of a sweeper, but not any more.
Am i being unrealistic? What does everyone else with a big lawn do?
