I am looking for a roof lantern for a kitchen extension. Initial thoughts were to go for a UPVC one, however the The roof-maker ones online look particularly good with a slim aluminium frame.

Has anyone used this company ? Any recommendations would be appreciated

I've got one on my little extension, at 1.5m x 1.0m. I was only interested in the slimline frame variety, as anything else I don't really like. And given the size, it would look daft on the back of my 150-175 year old cottage. I ordered mine via Ebay in the end as it was cheaper to have it pre-assembled and delivered that way. Really pleased with it, and it arrived quickly.

I have used roof maker now for 3 separate rood lights on my new home

One flat triple glazed 3mx1m and the other two were lanterns also triple glazed for noise reduction 3.5m x 1m and 1.25m x 2m on each occasion the entire experience from ordering to delivery was top notch and the lanterns are extremely well made. Here are some photos of them

I've used Roofmaker too.

IIRC they used to sell them cheaper on Ebay so worth checking.

IIRC, I basically got mine built and delivered for free vs buying direct! Not sure if they still sell this way though.

Thanks for the advice all. I have taken a look at the eurocell ones, the frames look a little bulky and hence why we were thinking of going for the roof maker lights.

Is triple glazing worth it for a 1.5m x.2.5m lantern? Also unsure whether to go for the blue tint, we are south facing so a lot of light during the day will be in this part of the extension.

Thanks

I have a big lantern on my Orangery and my biggest regret is that I used a local supplier recommended by the architect, I should have done some research and bought one of these frameless ones as that would match my windows better. Loving the looks of some of the ones above.

Blue tint is lovely - you feel better on a grey day.

I would mention that they do seem to attract flies and then spiders - and your wife won't want to stand on 8' steps to clean it.

I have spoken with Roofmaker and they suggested the blue tint for a south facing room, cuts out UV and reduces direct glare which might not be a bad idea considering the lantern will be directly above a kitchen island, however it does reduce the light transmission by about 20%

JC180 - did you consider the blue tint by any chance? How is the internal view?

Bugger, just been out on the roof ad measured my Lantern, its 2400 X 3300 which is beyond Roof-Makers maximum.

If it does it wasn't noticeable.

Unless it's tiny and the only light source in the room it won't matter

Ok , I am glad to hear this . I was concerned whether this made an actual difference as it would defeat the purpose of having a roof light in the first place.

I have a couple from http://www.visionrooflights.co.uk/slimline_lantern...

We have blue glass, appears to help keep the heat at bay. Cannot remember the exact size, as due to a measuring 'error' by our builder we ended up with them being custom built rather than stock size. Definitely larger than 3m long and 2m wide.

I'm pretty sure the size you're after wouldn't be an issue, originally we were looking at 6m or so, until we went for two smaller ones to help define the extension into two sections.

I'm looking to knock my old extension down, double it and add roof glass in some shape or form. Its a flat roof at the moment, and I'm hoping for a pitch (and velux) but if I can't get a suitable degree of pitch then I might look to add one of these. I notice the U value for the triple glazed is 0.6 yet in real world terms, that means little to me. Do these things lose a lot of heat through them?

0.6 sounds very efficient: I was always under the impression triple glazing was more about noise reduction than any substantial more energy efficiency....we were getting 2 x 4m bifolds, & were told triple glazing would make them rather heavy: double glazed works fine for us!

Thanks for the great help here. I think I will go for the blue tint. Now need to see if they can offer any discount.
