I'm getting my place ready for renting and the patio doors don't lock. The key goes in and turn clockwise, but not all the way round to enable it to lock. The actual handle/lever to lock the door from being opened does work, but the barrel/lock doesn't. I hope that makes sense... wobble
My question is, is the patio door too old to buy a new barrel lock, and possibly renew the handle and lever (although the lever works, it's a bit notchy) and fix the issue? Or am I looking at putting in a new patio door?

Thanks in advance for any info!

My first move would be to put some 3-in-1 oil on the key and give it a good wiggle about, and/or make sure it's not an alignment issue.

you could always look at something like this.

plenty of other alternatives apart from renewing the door

I had a lock that wouldn't turn easily. I flushed the lock out with WD40 and then it worked. I poked the red tube into the lock and gave it a very long squirt - think hosing the lock out with WD40 for several seconds.

That looks like an aluminium Everest patio door.
It's very easy replacing the Euro cylinder (see Youtube), but the door frame is only about 3.5cm thick. Euro cylinders that depth are available but don't really have enough pins to be secure. A longer one with more pins will protrude outside and be very easy to snap.

Current Euro cylinders are designed for UPVC doors which have much thicker frames.

I've just taken out the barrel and it turns freely 360 degrees. Once you put it back into the door, It stops in the same place.

So the tab/bar thing in the barrel isn't lining up with what ever's in the door (which you can't get to). I've taken the handle off and the lever stays in place, but there's not way of getting to the inner workings inside the door. It's almost like you'd have to take the door out to get to the mechanism from the top or bottom with a coat hanger or something wobble

The only screws (apart from the barrel) inside the length of the sliding door, are the 3 sets of screws for the locking bars/tabs that move up and down when you lift or lower the lever confused

Thanks for the replies so far chaps.

Can you open the door and then try the lock with the door in the open position? That'll let us know if the problem is with the lock/handle or with the door alignment.

Nope. Tried that. Won't lock either open or shut.

There should be a pin on the frame that goes into the door to allow it to lock, is that adjusted correctly

I have no idea what that looks like or where it is confused But will have another look in the morning. It's not looking like an easy fix currently. In fact, a fix at all frown

OP you'll sort it. Locks and barrels are understandable once apart :-)

Surely just means the barrel/cylinder is mismatched to the door & you need to measure up and get a replacement cylinder that matches
If you remove the screw and wiggle backwards or forwards does it work? Is the barrel fitted backwards?

No. This is the barrel tha's been with the door, when it was working before.

No. not in any combination. Door open, closed, latch up, latch down, central...

No. It's fitted correctly.
