I'm finally getting round to kitting out my little boy's playroom (he is 6 months old), we have got 3 Ikea Kallax units on one wall facing the door and opposite this we want a decent sized corner sofa.

Now most of the sofas we have seen don't offer any kind of storage under the seats which seems a bit of a waste, I've got sports bags and he will have bigger toys that need to be stored out of the way so my plan is to use two Ikea storage units as a base, fit some ply on top, hinge them and get some cushions made up to form a sofa, with the back cushions being up against the wall.

The problem I have is that every kind of cut to order sofa foam retailer wants to charge an absolute fortune for the stuff, let alone the costs of upholstering it. Is anyone able to suggest a suitable foam supplier or person that can make the cushions?

A staple gun, some spray adhesive and a few metres of fabric should be doable for a man of your talents.

I have bought similar foam before for another purpose but there are so many different grades it's difficult to tell what the good stuff is. I'd like to be able to take the cushions off and wash them because they will be getting grubby so spray glue and a staple but might not cut it unfortunately.

Decent foam is expensive.

You will want at least 2 inch thick blue foam if it is a bench but more if you want to have it as a comfy sofa.

4 inch green (softer than blue) would be perfect for sofa, the back is not as important as the seat carries the weight. Back I would use scatter cushions as you will get a better look as a DIY job.

I would love to help you out with supplying but I have shut my upholstery business down a couple of years ago now.

Another thing, make you foam cushions 1 inch larger than your finished cover width and depth wise and half an inch thicker than you boarder size. You will also need Daxron flock on top of the cushions with a muslin stocking over the top to make the cushion finished nicely.

Normally you buy 4 inch foam and just cut a 3 1/2 inch finished board for the cushion

I was hoping you would reply! Any suggestions on where is the best place to get this stuff these days? Is there any particular spec of the scatter cushion foam I should be looking for? Is 4 inches also thick enough to be really comfortable if it is on a solid base?

I think he meant you buy the scatter cushions in The Range etc.

I have to say I couldn't offer any advise as to where. I got all my supplies from a company called Porter Forsters now porter valmic

https://www.portervalmic.co.uk/

I don't think they do small orders I am afraid.

Genuinely best bet is ebay. I will try and dig up a link or two for you. If there is nothing by sunday, post back here so it pops back up in "my stuff".

4in green will be lovely on a hard base, blue would be ok to but it is a firmer foam. I would only use it for elderly peeps in their seats so they could get in and out of a chair easier. For a solid base though it wouldn't be bad as there is nothing underneath giving like springs so you are reliant on the foam not bottoming out.

For backs, as Simpo said, go for shop bought large (feather) scatters. Finish will be great and it is the first thing the eye hits so will look like a pro job if you don't completely fk the seat cushions up (don't pipe them, don't go for stripes, it will hide a multitude of sins).

Just trying to think of ways of make it look and feel as good as possible for the least effort. No getting away from the fact that decent foam does cost though.

Where abouts are you?
