Being in the south we have the horrible very hard water, anyone got particular water softener solutions to recommend?

Bear in mind they need a power supply, regular salt, and a fresh water drinking supply to the kitchen... which could be a factor on the location.

Have a look at a Monarch Scaleout SC3 as an alternative.

Happy to recommend https://www.dorsetwatersofteners.com/ - ours has been running for 3 years, since Paul fitted it, no problems at all.

Notice a massive improvement with ours to the extent that you notice it in the shower when the salt runs out! No power needed for ours. We went with Harveys and their interest free finance option. Very professionally fitted along with a fresh water tap drilled into a granite work surface. the salt blocks last about a month and we just get a bulk delivery every 6 months from a local supplier at a decent price.

Same here; got sick of replacing chalked fittings, irons & kettles. All ours is softened.

Massively better. You get the money back in savings on washing powder, soap and shampoo in the end.

We have a kinetico fitted- no need for power and drinking water is from fridge which is plumbed in before the softener.
Makes a big difference

I've had 3 of these (different houses) and all were great. You get larger pipe connections too so no loss of flow.

We have horrendously hard water & fitted 2 of these on our house, one on the incoming main & one in the airing cupbard, manufacturer recommended it due to the size of the house , http://www.lifescience.co.uk/domestic-water-king.p...

That was over 20 years ago & haven't replaced a single tap or shower head, you do get scale but its very soft & mostly can be wiped off, if you forget to keep the shower head clean & it gets blocked you can clean holes with a toothbrush or similar but easier just soak the head in "white" vinegar for a few hours and its good as new, don't use conventional malt vinegar as it might stain any lightly coloured fittings.

If you do go the convectional expensive softener don't forget the extra outside tap for washing the car !

But if it's used for watering the garden and plants you'll want it hard.

Yep. That's what the other outside tap is for

Sadly don't have a water dispensing fridge anymore as it packed up last year and I replaced it with a smaller one, only two of us.

Stop cock is also in a cupboard in hallway, not in the kitchen.

Will see what harveys's say.

Would be good to hear what they quote, Kinetico HQ is in walking distance of my house, so Id probably invite them round. My stop cock is under the kitchen sink with power, however that cupboard has a high ish floor which would need some attention/a saw.

Our softener is outside as we did not want to give up any cupboard space. Harveys were amazing in getting everything sorted and plumbed. The installer even tidied up the pipework that we inherited when we moved in. Outside tap is still hard water along with the hard water tap in the kitchen we have never used. Only babies and old people need un-softened water.

Just down the road from me too.
