Good Afternoon

I've recently just purchased my first house, and i'm looking for decorating ideas.

The house is fairly small (coach house), and is a 2009 build with intact beige carpet, I don't have the funds to replace all the carpet and it would be a shame to not at least get a bit more use out of them. Although I am looking to decorate the house as all the walls are beige, and it would be nice to put my own touch on it before moving in (currently living with my parents so i'm sure they won't mind another week of me at home whilst I paint the place.) the reason I am asking for a little assistance is because I would like the wall colour to be compatible with the beige carpets, and the rest of the decor. Also i'm a bit worried about stuff not matching etc.

My thoughts at the moment would be

Living Room/Open Plan Kitchen - Pastel/Light Grey - with a grey fabric chesterfield, and dark coffee table, book shelf and tv stand

Bedroom - Pastel Green, with a neutral bed and cabnit (same colour as photos)

Hallway - Some sort of red, although this may overpower the carpets?

I've included images of the house advert below:

Any advice or real images would be appreciate, decorating ideas on google are a nightmare as they don't really show any simple designs.

Thanks in advance

Anything goes with beige carpet.

Maybe choose complimentary colours that work throughout the house so if you want to move furniture around it still looks OK wherever you put it.

Have a look on Houzz to get some ideas, search 'Beige Carpets".

To be honest, it depends more on what furniture you have, what curtains/blinds you put up will make more of a difference.

I think the greys are nice, but you need to be careful, make sure it is a warm grey or it will look very strange.

Something like Dolphin?

Or Portland Stone Dark??

We used Rolling Fog in our kitchen as we had beige in our tiles, I did it first in a grey and it just didn't work.

Rolling fog..

Find a local paint place that does Little Greene and Farrow & Ball and get some sample cards and take them home, then get them to make some paint up for you, many will match the colours with Dulux Trade or similar at half the price of Farrow & Ball and cheaper than B&Q etc. too.

You're in quite a fortunate position in that anything goes with beige. There's some lovely warm greys around at the moment.

We had the same dilemma recently. Tested around 12 different shades and settled on F&B Ammonite. A very warm grey without being too light.

We had beige carpets until a few weeks ago and had F&B 'Clunch' in most places as it's compatible with pretty much anything. Also had F&B 'Off White' which basically looks a bit green and 'French Grey'.

That being said, I wouldn't waste money on Farrow and Ball paints again having discovered Crown Extreme Scrubbable Matt - very similar finish but absolutely leagues ahead in coverage and durability.

F&B have some great swatches, biut as you said, find a local paint place that knows their paints and get better paint at half the price.

That's good to know as we're about to do our (large) hall stairs and landing and want something a bit more durable. I really liked the F&B, 5L did the whole room with 3 coats which I wouldn't have managed with any previous paint I'd tried. It may have been almost double the price but it worked out only about 20% more expensive based on coverage.

When you say "local paint place" what kind of thing are you talking about? Only ones I know are places like dulux stores and the usual DIY places. Any other recommendations apart from the Crown stuff?

Yeah the Farrow and Ball colours are lovely and I like the 'schemes' they give you as inspiration - makes it easy to choose colours. We've got the Modern Emulsion in our bathroom and the finish is poor in comparison with the Crown Extreme Scrubable.

I've just painted three bedrooms with it (very pale grey) and it did it all in one coat (needed two coats on the cut-in areas). Three average sized bedrooms (4m x 4m) has used 7.5 litres. It's good stuff and I wouldn't use anything else now.

If you are using greys, you could consider pinks as contrast. I mean very pale pinks like Dulux Party Surprise 4 or 5.

Are you near a Brewers?

https://www.brewers.co.uk/stores

They have all the brands, and will mix up any colour you want into pretty much any paint.

Plus the guys in there know their stuff, they got me into Zinsser BIN when I wanted to paint my old varnished kitchen, I was going to strip them and then prime them and paint them, those guys said "Sod that! Zinsser BIN, tinted to the colour you want from Little Greene, job done" They were right and saved me a fortune and a lot of time and money.

I was going to ask the same question regarding the chair - thanks again for all the responses.

I'm only in the early stages of the house purchase, but already excited to put my own touch on it.

I agree with white, but maybe an antique white?

This is Little Greene Rolling Fog, light on the walls and mid on the cabinets.

Same again on the walls in here.....

It is not quite as harsh as pure white, and tends to work better with beige.
Dulux do one called Linen, in various shades...

F&B fan here - have used Ammonite extensively in various projects.

(Or at least my wife has; she selects it, I buy it and someone else applies it - sometime me but usually a pro).

And, as others have suggested, Modern White & Cornforth White worth considering

Also like Skimming Stone & Elephant's Breath.

All five of those go together - you can just vary the darkness/deepness in various rooms.

IIRC the wood is normally Slipper Satin

Front door Off Black.

Job jobbed.

Next one starting soon and we'll be using variations on those colours again.

I have F&B Cornforth White in a couple of rooms which is a very light grey - maybe worth considering.
