I have a mate who did work placement at an EA as part of his Uni course. Spent a while writing the blurbs for ads, hadn't seen any of the houses himself, just made up the whole ad based off the pictures...
Much like mortgage valuations from many lenders. A drive by, if that...

I just can't get my head around the totally different coloured bricks of which i am assuming was an extension at some point.

Some of it is the sheer frustration of house hunting, saw this, looks promising from the exterior, click eagerly.

Only to discover they've ripped out every last vestige of character, and left an awkward interior and kitchen. Despite being "immaculately presented"

http://www.rightmove.co.uk/property-for-sale/prope...
If I am looking at the floorplan correctly, the glossy light grey units are one half of the kitchen and the white units under the windows are the other half. Both bits have a sink and an oven, but only one hob. But they stole space in the rearmost part to put a downstairs bathroom in.

It doesn't really deserve to be in the thread, but the layout is rather odd.

I give you this.

£1m for an ugly 90's house of just 1700 square feet. On a decaying private estate with attendant service charge, that includes an absolute tonne of social housing. Which means that not only is it a bit of a st place to live, but you are paying for repairs to the homes of people who don't care about damaging them.

Next to a park (the admittedly lovely Brockwell Park) you cannot actually access from the estate, and have to walk miles round to get to.

And needing full refurbishment. Which will probably need the permission from the estate manager/developer: any extensions or external alterations definitely will.

But this is a kicker. It is opposite, and I mean right opposite, the infamous Tulse Hill Estate, where stabbings, shootings and general criminality are a regular occurrence.

The only amenity nearby is an Esso station. Brixton, Herne Hill and Tulse Hill proper, with their shops and bars, are over three quarters of a mile away.

I'm out, thanks.

I used to work around the corner from there on Norwood Road, and unknowingly met a very high profile international terrorist...

Grim is an understatement.

I thought it looked good value for a million smile

What about this £280k for what effectively appears to be a garage conversion http://www.rightmove.co.uk/property-for-sale/prope...

State of the landscaping suggests that's been vacant & unmaintained for years.

State of the floor by the windows suggests it's leaking & deteriorated.

Note at the end suggests access rights could be interesting. Plus non-standard construction isn't going to help sell it either.

I don't know the area or what else is available, but if I had to live inside the M25 I can think of worse ways to get on the property ladder. Bachelor pad for young professional who doesn't want housemates so needs a reasonable sized mortgage on one salary. I also quite like the use of space. I'd take that over a bedsit any day.

A million quid for something that size is perfectly normal in that part of Zone 3 - but it will be for a pretty period/1930s terrace in nearby Streatham or Tulse Hill.

There is no need to spend a million on a badly maintained estate house on a road that will see you stabbed at night time by the numerous scrotes patrolling outside the development gates - literally outside.

Ugh. Although no-one will buy it at that price - agent and vendor are dreaming.

I quite like what they've done with the garage. Parking is good, but it's a pity they haven't made more use of the old driveway as usable space.

Seeing the house prices on here for some properly gopping houses, mostly London way, makes me realise just how cheap property can be in the West Midlands.

How do young people even get onto the property ladder in these areas? I know wages are higher, and lots of lucky young people have help from family etc, but £300k for essentially a bathtub with a window is mental.

They don't. I work in The City, and no-one here under 30 owns a property in London, many under 25 live with parents, and most others flat share. We aren't bankers, but pay here is not bad, by any means.

It's reminiscent of what happened in Manhattan a 20 years ago, and Brooklyn more recently. No-one of normal income actually lives there any more.
