It does get crazy - If 'society' makes something we should be able to dispose of it...... Ah hangon! Isn't it a manufacturer's requirement now to recycle? Take it to the manufacturer's agent biggrin
Crazy things happen... When we moved in 13 years ago OH wanted internal doors changed (I agreed). 5 doors in car and at tip I was told I could only dump 1. I asked "what to do with other 4?" 'You can bring them back 1 a week' "why only 1 a week" 'It's to save the environment' "but won't me driving back and forth ruin the environment?" 'You can only dump 1 door!". So next week I took all handles and hinges off, and rolled up with a car full of wood! 'Are they doors mate?' "Just some bits of wood" 'Ok just put them in the skip over there' laugh Crazy. If we create a throwaway society we have to suffer the waste issues.

Next time you have something like this, if you don't mind driving an hour or so, come and use the tip near us, Brixworth Recycling Centre in Daventry District Council area. They take everything including paint, timber, hardcore, rubble, engine oil, car batteries, everything. Even better, if it can be recycled, they will. Whenever I take stuff, I separate metals and hard plastics as they're both recycled. They also have a reuse area so if there's anything that can be saved, they will. They're also very helpful and will help you unload if you're on your own and struggling. If you let me know in advance, I'll come and give you a hand as I only live a few minutes away. beer
Very nice, thank you.

Someone I know was refused entry to a tip because the small trailer attached to their Orion (it was a while ago, although not that long!) had four wheels rather than two. He had to either go home and move it all into his two wheel trailer, or, walk all the bits through from outside the premises by hand.

I wonder if it's their power kick sometimes

I was once refused entry to our local tip on foot (by a rude jobsworth from the council), because you were only permitted to arrive by car due to "health and safety". I was going to ask why there was a footpath if you weren't allowed to use it, but thought better of it.

I was thinking that as I was writing. I would say that is probably the case now, but this was over 10 years ago.

I've heard that in some places in the US, they weigh your car before you enter and then when you leave and calculate a cost of what you just dumped. I'd be okay with a small charge for certain items, so long as you could actually dispose of them. I'd worry the price would heavily outstrip the rate of inflation, though.

Ah I never even considered Gratham. Didn't know it was in S Kesteven. I was just thinking of friendly garages in Stamford.

One parliamentary constituency, too! Not that people in Stamford would be too pleased about that...

I've had a similar debate with the Council - LWB vans are banned from the tip.

As my T4 is a LWB, I asked what length was an issue "There isn't a length issue but we don't want LWB vans on site"

I pointed out a Connect LWB was shorter than a Transit and my T4 LWB was shorter than a Sprinter - she just repeated that LWB were banned.

I have kept going without issue.

Absolutely mind boggling how short sighted and jobsworth the councils are.

On the face of it, they'd do this to prevent pedestrians and cars moving around in the same place.

But I suspect a large part is to monitor quantities being brought in per day: apnr can do this quite well.

There's also a bit of avoiding mess as people drag stuff around and bits get dropped, and managing traffic to avoid a phalanx of vans being parked up down the road.

I agree it's a short sighted policy that doesn't help address fly tipping, but councils are trying to manage volume down to save cash, and it's hard to break out of that cycle.

Our local tip tend to take general waste bags from you and rip them open to take a look.

My local tip does this too. Whenever they ask me what's in a black bag, I just say "rubbish".

It's like a grown up version of "pass the parcel", but smellier.

Same where I'm from in Ireland; council tax doesn't cover bins, so you pay a local waste company for wheelie bin collection, & drive to their depot and pay be weight for non wheelie-binable stuff. Local council do have an oil/paint disposal spot but it's open between 10 and half 10 once a month or something.

My local one (Lount, Leicestershire) won't take paint or tires, kwik fit will take 'em for 2 quid each or something so I think it's worth a tenners of my time to save chopping up the carcasses & drip feeding the bin

Perhaps it varies by council or area.

Recently dumped 5 big and full Transit-van-loads of old junk from 2 houses and 4 garages, including car parts and big doors, and the local recycling centre took the lot, no questions asked. Even helped to unload the van and stick it in the right skips.

My local tip will take anything, just no commercial vehicles.

Wheelie bin would be a no go up here, we are on 3 weekly collections. Total joke tbh.

The money saved going from 1 to 2 to 3 weeks is being spent on "adult learning services".

I.e don't expect a lower council tax bill..

Our council employ jobsworths and close some week days. So it get fly tipped on our road. Then they send a team out to remove it to the tip!!
This was yesterday's contribution!!

I forgot to mention that... ours is only open four days a week, too.

I wonder if the contractors who collect fly tipping pay off the council tip jobsworths to be a big a pain in the arse as possible?

Went to the "recycling centre" other day - they take and re-use furniture, I had two drawer units which some bu99ger could have made use of but as attempting to go to the tip in my van is the exact equivalent of child murder in council tip terminology round here, I smashed them up so they'd fit in our other motor, mrs hairys 330ci.

The other thing I had was a couple of bags of plaster... mixed waste or hardcore? No, "we don't take plaster" "um what do I do with it?" "you'll have to take it somewhere else" gee thats helpfull.
