I've just done these in black nickel flat plate. LAP range from Screwfix. Nice change from the usual chrome/brushed.

This is one of the LightwaveRF light switches - that white surround can be removed and painted. We've used them throughout the house.

They come with a black centre too, but those have chrome/steel surrounds. The stainless steel one could be painted too, I guess.

Spent a fortune on chrome fittings when doing a refurb, fast forward a couple of years and I'm replacing them all with white ones.

Can't stand chrome, looks dated, the switches feel naff and you see finger prints all over them.

I personally like the brushed steel ones; not the shiny chrome ones. But make sure they are decent type. I bought mine online from electrical counter. They are the BG Nexus range, brushed steel (not screwless). I recently did a couple of bedrooms in them and I think they finish off the room very nice.

However, we have some white in other rooms and equally they look ok. I think it depends on what look you want. I don't think the brushed steel have gone out of fashion - most refits etc I've seen recently have gone with something similar (and that's not just in my house tongue out)

Make sure he fits 35mm backboxes everywhere, most builders-on-a-price stick in slim 25mm's which are no good as the flatplate projects more on the back than white plastic.

Personally think white plastic looks fine, blends in more, you dont actually *need* to be making a feature of plug sockets, find something else to draw the eye. Modern/industrial looking doesnt mean better, worst of all is loads of contrasting chrome downlights though, peppering and cluttering a ceiling when some matt white units would blend in nicely..

Or if you really want to be swish theres a couple of co's that will make bespoke accessories to suit, so you can have say 13a + 5a + phone + cat5 on one plate rather than a whole row of seperate plates which looks great but isnt cheap.
