Hi Folks

I have been unemployed for quite a while now and getting the feeling that my working days are over !! I am 48 years old with over 15 years experience in accounts/finance and also have an accountancy qualification.

Could somebody be kind enough to advice me what steps I could take (if any) in order to gain employment?

I am even thinking of becoming self employed by advising businesses how to set up and what things they need to do in order to satisfy HMRC requirements and doing their bookkeeping for them, but there doesn't seem to be much of a market in that, even though I was under the impression that there are more self employed people than ever before !!

My wife and myself are getting quite depressed and worried about the whole situation !!

Any advice greatly appreciated.

Thank You.

my tip would be take any job. Get around people, mix and get money coming in, even if a little. A bigger company is best and then put feelers for other jobs.

You will always limit yourself looking for one type of job. Another option set up a limited company and do contract work as best as you can at any level.

There must be temp or agency work you can get in general office admin and accountancy? Surely? Where do you live?

Personally if it paid more than the dole and was within a 2 hour commute I'd take it and go from there, you can always set up your own thing on the side and bin the agency stuff when it takes off. You don't sound very motivated to be fair, maybe you need to a kick in the pants?

Hi Folks

Many thanks for your replies.

I live in Wolverhampton, West Midlands, and registered with the major recruitment agencies for general office and accountancy work. All to often, the agencies state that they forward my cv to employers but then I get rejected - always the standard reply -'They found a more suitable client'.

FredClogs - What makes you think I'm not motivated?

In principle, no one should be unemployed (bar exceptional circumstances, and you've not given the impression that you fall in to that category).

Therefore, we need to know why you're struggling. Do you have enough insight to tell us why? Then we may be able to give more targeted advice.

I guess if you're starting to think your working days are behind you at 48 you're either incredibly fortunate or not motivated to get out there. I just don't get the defeatist mindset. I don't want to sound callous I feel for your position, maybe I've just been fortunate, but I wouldn't give in until I found something. Knock on doors, send out CVs with covering letters to every accountancy firm in the West Midlands (now before the price of stamps goes up), there must be hundreds and hundreds. Even stick your numbers and a link to your linked in profile up around time - who knows you might even make the media.

I sympathise with you. A female friend of mine had accountancy/book keeping skills and was made redundant at 53 but managed to get temp work through an agency...which resulted in permanent work. In her case it was worse for her to find work as she had a host of health issues.
I was made redundant at 50 and chose the self-employment route, as I thought my age was a barrier when there's so many people applying for jobs. Why wouldn't someone choose a young, eager, enthusiastic youngster?
I'm happy being self-employed, you might be too smile

The young eager person will be young and eager, but lack life experience, will generally be less reliable and require more training, then once up to speed will move on to a new job. Sometimes a role will be better filled by youth and enthusiasm, othertimes it's better filled by experience and guile.

If your finances allow, start getting paid for what you enjoy doing.

I enjoy driving and became a self-employed courier. It pays enough to keep my head above water, but I'll never be rich, but that was never the objective smile.

Hi Folks

Many thanks for your replies.

I am a qualified bookkeeper and in the process of finding clients. I have advertised online and dropped leaflets to in and around the neighbourhood, but no luck.

Similiarly, I enjoy teaching maths up to GCSE level (although I'm not a qualified teacher) and have dropped leaflets to neighbourhood to see if they have kids who would like help with their maths. I have only had 2 students who have expressed an interest. Obviously, I need a lot more than 2 students in order to meet expenses.

Any further advice greatly appreciated.

At 59 I've had 40+ years in the meat trade , I now drive for a living.

Have you ever thought of another career?

Have you thought about driving as an in-between job?

You live near the majority of dealers run by the Listers Group. Failing that, Listers also have some Accounts roles going; two in Solihull and one in Droitwich.

http://listers.co.uk/Careers/Search?role=Accounts_... - then select the other roles on the right hand side to have a look.

Good luck!

I did half of a PGCE and decided that it wasn't a good idea to teach in schools - the news consistently proves that I was right smile.

Check what you legally need to be allowed to home tutor. PGCE / CRB checks, etc.

It sounds an excellent idea. I may consider it myself as none of the problems that I foresaw would be present in home-schooling wink.
