Not sure if this is right place or even if it's just me being a grumpy sod about things ....

Field next to us, developer started work on it over the last couple of months. Twice now (on days I happen to be at home... which makes me think it could be a more regular thing) I have seen workers from the development come to the end of our drive where there is a stand-pipe connection (is that the right description?).

First time it was with a Road roller - seemed to fill its tanks with water, wash it off, then trundle off down the road back to the development. Second time, today, connected a hose that ran into the field, maybe to Road roller again? But all I saw was a chap going back and forward between field and our Road, including climbing over a fence.

I would have thought they should connect in to the local utilities as a priority, not least from a charging point of view these days? The washing off the Road roller also surely should be at a vehicle wash on site if needed?

Anyone involved in developments/ building regs know?

And yes, had I realised sooner what was going on (or been dresses on the first occasion!) I would have gone out and asked!

I don't know much about rollers, but some of the big yellow tonka toy stuff needs to be greased everyday, so they need to wash off round the grease nipples.

I would guess they ran the hose so as not to get any crap near you.
Although maybe they are just topping up the roller (weight)

They should have asked, the guys I know would have their own water tanker if nothing on site.

I don't think it's worth kicking up a big stink, unless they are have a lake to fillbiggrin

A bit naughty though.

Water stand pipes are fine to use but you need a license for them and some if not all water providers will make you hire a metered one so they can be charged accordingly

Although some contractors will happen to have one laying around form the good old days we have a few knocking about but I don't know how harsh the penalties are

Thanks for replies.

Just to respond to the above

He ran the hose over it when it was at the end of our drive, which by Road is a couple of hundred meters from Road entrance to development - think opposite corners of a square, we are at the end of a road that runs 90 degrees to the main road the access to development is from.

As you say - at least a bit naughty, just not sure how much more + would like to get them to stop!

Are they on private land? If not there's not much you can do if they are legally paying to using the stand pipe or maybe dob them in to the water board but if there legal they won't do anything

Not naughty at all if they have a metered standpipe and they are using a hydrant marked WO for washout.

no metered standpipe as far as I could tell - yesterday it was just a hose running across the field in the direction of the building works.
