Lost a single ridge tile from the gable end of my house last week. Tile will need replacing, driveway runs up the side of the house so with tall enough ladders is easily accessible.

I've no feel at all for how much this should be - I've had one quote so far of £100. This is from a tradesman local to me in Nottingham.

Any input appreciated.

£100 is fare enough as it's high up, cold, wet , should only take him a hour or so.

I'm guessing £10 for the tile. £30 labour for actual work.

Plus he has to collect the tile and drive to and from your house. HMRC will want 20% VAT. He has to run a van and do his books

£80 cash.....that's if he turns up

Fair price you've been quoted. Make sure he clips it to avoid repeat.

One of my clients had 2 tiles replaced ( similar reason) for £80, 2 storey house - which I thought was very good. Location, a couple of miles North of Bedford.

I'd have expected someone to be happy paying £100.

It wouldn't be worth him getting out of bed for much less than that.

Find a roofer near by, should pop up there for £20.
Obviously ask him to do it on his way home from work.

I'm basing on a wet ridge.

Would you go up a ladder in the middle of winter and repair a roof for £20. Of course you wouldn't.

And don't worry, less and less people are willing to do it. Therefore the one that is willing to will be charging 80 plus quid.

As my old boss said to me many years ago, "you're not 19 anymore, nothing is twenty quid anymore".

Thanks for the input. £100 didn't seem daft but at the same time I didn't want to be taken for an idiot.

seems fair to me, and linking to the earlier £80 for 2, I'd expect it to be pretty much the same £100 for 2 - It's the getting there, climbing up, safety insurance, overheads which are the cost.
Edited to correct to £100

Replaced a ridge tile on my house last week, although I am pretty good at d-I-y, and have several heavy duty ladders including roofing ones.

Cost £2.50 plus small bucket of sand/cement.

Just make sure you get a reputable bloke, lots of cowboys about, as roofer will testify.

Ok if you're good at height - I'm too scared of falling so I'd prefer to pay £100 wink

Fair enough, if you are not confident about tackling the job, better to be safe than sorry.
