Any real difference between them other than width they can take. Not a pro but have a requirement for one that a normal planer and belt sander would take too long to do

One thing to remember is that the longer the planer bed the straighter the timber will be, so when you thickness the straighter it will come out the machine.

If your only planing/thicknessing short lengths <1000 - 1200 mm, then not such a problem smile

Difference as in quality? Definitely,
I do Italian SCM kit, something like the FS30 Would probably suffice but you're looking at just over £3k including VAT whereas an Axminster or Record power could probably be had for around £500.
This guy's review of the SCM shows what you get for your money. https://youtu.be/sf6kWS_Mhgs
Here's the demo of the Axminster

I have an old Elektra Beckum HC 260 Planer/Thicknesser, I bought off eBay for £260
It's a great bit of kit.

ukworkshop forum has some very detailed insights... but useful to know that lots of people turn out beautiful woodwork using the £150 "lunchbox" planers from Screwfix. (With a warranty). The more expensive ones are certainly "better", but not everyone needs a Wadkin etc.

That's the thing I'm new to wood working but I'm enjoying it done some green wood before also made a long bow etc but we want some new furniture and I thought why not and found a nice place for cheap wood but obviously it's not nice clean true planks smile

I think I'm after a lunch box type. I could get the bits I need done now at work but it's an excuse for new toys hehe
