Just doing some planning for a lounge refurbish, and rather than putting a wood burning stove in I'm starting to think about a gas burning stove. N.B. not a manky old style gas fire, but something like this http://www.stovax.com/products/stoves/contemporary...
Does anyone have experience of this, doesn't have to be Stovax, just something similar, and would you do it again, or avoid like the plague?

Thanks.

I've had two in for 3 years or so having had wood stoves before and would never go back very happy with them.
The heat is great in both a large kitchen/living room and smaller living room.

Being able to switch on and off in a second is also a major plus. The only thing I really miss is the ritual of lighting a fire.

Get ready for completely opposing views as both owners prefer what they have!!

I have a Stovax proper stove and it's fine.

However the idea of having something that is obviously designed to burn wood and coal - but doesn't - shouts 'fake' to me.

If you want easy, stick to central heating.

Would certainly like one with remote control!

The ability to switch the heat on and off is one of the main attractions, not something which can really be done with a wood burner.

Mine have the remotes although it's only for turning up or down still have to turn on and off at the pilot switch!

Some examples here:

I'm v.pleased with ours 3 years on. It has a pilot light, but once that is on, the stove is controlled by a remote, which can also have thermostatic control. I only turn off the pilot in the summer.

On those days when it's not worth running the heating for the whole house, it warms up the living room a treat.

This is the one in my kitchen and when installed friends thought it was wood as that's what I had before.

Some of them do look fake but this one doesn't imho.

What do you mean it doesn't look fake? It's a gas fire that looks like a wood burner.

My parents have just removed one - they found it horrendously expensive to run for any decent amount of time.

I mean that people who have seen it assume it's wood as that's what was there previously so it must look reasonably realistic.

real stoves have their time and place but it is a fag cleaning and emptying them plus the inevitable dust they kick out.
