We have a small 2 bed cottage, no option of mains gas

At the moment it's all on electric night storage heaters that we despise, so we are just about to rip them out and install electric underfloor downstairs, and keep the night stoage heaters upstairs but top up with plugged in oil filled rads.

The electric underfloor was always only to "do" for now, and we were going to install oil and proper heating in 5-10 years

however its just dawned on me that the bill to buy the electric underfloor heating is over £1,200 thats not including the instilation (£250) or more importantly the running costs.

How much would it cost me for a full new oil heating and hot water system, including install, on a 2 bed cottage, 3 up 3 down size?

Might be worth biting the bullet now......

You can go gas - LPG. Tank install's free, because you rent it (pennies/day). Boiler/hob are exactly the same as normal mains, but they change the jets when they install it.

Nothing in life is ever free

You are tied to one supplier for a period

LPG is (currently) more expensive

I'm saving a fortune moving from LPG to oil.

Two years, and we're currently paying c.35p/litre - fixed price for the first year, with £250 gas bonus, and 4p max rise in the second (we're in that second year now - so looking around soon for September's change).

Most importantly, for us, we can cook on gas - and we don't have to fanny with bottles (at about twice the price per litre).

OP

given your situation have you considered a wood burner (as well)?

I've considered everything, gas, wood pellet, air source, ground source, solar, but oil seems to be the best option for me!

I've got a wood burning stove in the lounge already, is that what you mean?

Thanks

What is it that you find so terrible about the storage heaters?

Have you considered infrared heating to replace your storage heaters, maybe with some solar pv also?

I've used Gas jobs be they mains gas or LPG then ceramic and now induction.

Without question the hassle factor of cleaning the safety with kids or yourself getting burnt pretty much zero and the fact it's so flexible you can match the heat change gas offers. So go electric on that front.

Ditto oven why bother with gas such a faff.

Heating I grew up with LPG the buggers would always come round to top it up whilst passing when the price was high.
You could go for air source heating 5-7ywar payback this holds the internal house temp at 18 degrees ish for UFH.
Geothermal heating.... still far too pricy and it will ruin the garden installing it. But once done then your good for life pretty much and off grid.
You could look at solar heating which could cut down the gas usage dramatically plus have UV cells for electric too again longer term payback but it does work (not great looking though but nor is a whopping oil tank or LPG tank in the garden).

Log burner with back boiler or wood burning aha or oil burning aha to hear the house and water are options too not cheap but very nice.

Kabin Pak external boilers are brilliant, I have specified loads of them and never a complaint yet. All outside and no need for a huge flue. Runs on a 13a plug, pump and everything else is built in.
Just hang your rads and plumb it up, job done.

Those figures sound about right +/-. Bigger tanks don't cost that much more than smaller ones, and would be my preference - something in the 2000 to 2500 litre range. Tank siting is subject to certain clearance distances from boundaries, sheds, eaves and windows etc.

I had a Grant Vortex Pro External boiler fitted about a year ago, which has been very efficient and reliable.

Don't bother with heat pumps unless your house is very well insulated - many 'cowboy' installers have jumped on the RHI bandwagon, specifying them even where totally inappropriate.

Depending on OPs garden and where the tank could be hidden I'd personally be getting the biggest possible tank available. When the oil price is low max it out / have enough to only need to refill annually or twice a year at the worst case. Kind of makes it feel more on the grid less hassle and you can manage the price you pay too.

We'll all know where to go for top ups smile

Worth remembering that "normal liquid rules" don't have to apply - the tank can be below the level of the boiler
They can also be reasonably "remote" ours was about 35m away

Well we had an engineer come out at the weekend, and the "ballpark" he gave was 7-8k

Thats new oil tank, new external boiler, unvented cylinder, UFH downstairs, Rads upstairs, and obviusly linking boiler/cylinder into kitchen and 2 bathrooms taps/showers.

That seem about right?
