Our smart meter was fitted for free. It was interesting for 5 minutes, but I just ignore it now.

About to change supplier too, so it won't work anymore. Do I care? Nope.
Not free actually - it's paid for from our and your bill. Thanks for that!
That's right - Smart Meters are free like the NHS is free, and old age pensions are free and child benefit is free.

Nowhere like the same as we know it's funded by our NI contributions - it's only lately that smart meter funding has been outed!

I'm not being entirely literal - free at the point of use

Equally there seems to be a fair section of the population who believe things are free

The only supplier that would take us onto a normal payment plan and remove the key meter without charge (albeit it after a few months) was E-on. This was may 2015 after we bought a place with pre-paid meters - meters fitted by previous tenants and nothing to do with us. If ever there was a system that needed a watchdog overhaul it is pre-paid meters. The whole system is one big rort for suppliers.

It's here in black and white.

I remember the letter we got from them well. Here have a 'free' smart meter.... we just won't say anything about increasing our prices soon to cover the cost!

Well stuff you then, I'm off smile

I know someone that joined British Gas and was trained purely to do smart meters. Seemed to me like a very niche employment and somewhat of a dead end in skill set.

That's been the case for years - you need CCN1 (core skills) plus the Meter addon module. Basically means you can't instal or work on any other gas equipment.
