Evening all,

Quick query if you don't mind - does anyone have any experience with having meters located inside a garage following an extension?

I'm getting plenty of conflicting advice.

I've just done this on a recent conversion project.
No real issues.

It can be done, no reason why not. Although only your gas/eletric supplier will be able to move them. Like wise if the incoming cable/gas main also need moving you will have to have the main gas/electric carrier move the actual supply. Speak directly to your supplier and they will advise you.

We have just had one moved for an extension we are doing to give you an example :- We put new meter box into wall, then Northern Powergrid to move incoming electric supply, Eon to move meter, finally electrician to reconnect house to the new meter. Not seen all the final bills yet but it will be in excess of a £1k to move it ~6m on the same wall (luckily in the direction of the main cable so no new cable needed just shortening the existing)

I doubt if the gas or building regulations have changed but you were not allowed to have a live uncontrolled gas service running inside/under a building. When extensions such as garages were added the meter was moved to an external box or the live supply terminated immediately though the external wall.

I thought that utility companies are insisting on new meter moves being outside only, so its easier for them to access.

And herein lies the problem our extension goes over the meters and the gas people are not very happy (10years later - at the time we were told it was fine and I'm hoping I have the documentation).

Any thoughts / advice on how to avoid a large bill very much appreciated.

Edit: building regs etc. We're all fine and signed off at the time and we've had countless meter readings and a very recent safety inspection!
