I'm looking at making my first foray into Porsche ownership. Gen 1 2.7 Caymans are on my radar for a couple of reasons:

1, If I'm led to believe the forums, the 2.7 engine is slightly more reliable and less prone to bore scoring.

2, In my 130i, I rarely get to full extend the revs in 3rd and 4th on the tight twisty country roads where I live without doing silly speeds. Therefore, I wonder if the 2.7 would be a better experience for my needs by using more of the engine more of the time.

Although power output is lower than my 130i, I think that this will be easily out weighed by lower kerb weight and a fantastic handling chassis. Has anyone owned both cars and what have your experiences been? What is the 2.7 like as an overall ownership preposition?

Thanks in advance.

Thanks, all good stuff. Hopefully find time to try one over Easter.

Did you try the 2.7 before going for the 3.4 or discount it on paper?

I had a 130 and borrowed a 2.7 Cayman whilst I had it. Cayman is a much nicer more special drive - only thing is that it noticeably lacks grunt compared to the 130.

I think it's driving characteristics are sufficiently special enough to make Cayman the one to have - but if you can go for a 3.4 then that maybe better.

I own a Cayman R. I've also owned a 135i. Driven a lot of Cayman S' and my best mate had a Cayman 2.7 for 7 years.

I think you'll prefer the 2.7 in every way. I don't think you'll notice the extra power of the bmw, they are very lardy. The 2.7 is still a great car and not slow. Really enjoyable to drive.

Thanks all, I will get out a drive one in the next couple off weeks and report back. It seems the power/grunt issue is subjective, so a drive will remedy that.

Any must have options? I assume most 2.7 are sparsely optioned as its a base model.

You gotta drive one and decide really, as mentioned above. I've driven both bmw 120 and 130i 2 years ago, for about a week each. I've not driven cayman 2.7 but own 2.7 boxster, personally these cars are much more satisfying as driving joy. Having a mid-engine, manual and handling makes a unique package with current prices.

The engine is a peach but unfortunately the gearing is a bit pants, certainly on the 5 speed, no experience of the 6 speed myself.

Engines that need to be revved right out paired with a gearbox that's good for ~100mph in third is a drawback, it has to be said.

As a comparison, my M5 was good for about the same speeds in the first three gears but because of the engine, you didn't feel short changed if you decided to change up at 4500rpm. The 2.7 in the Cayman and Boxster are just starting to properly shift at that point.

My Clio is similarly peaky to the 2.7 but I can get more use out of 3rd on country roads and it's all the better for it.

The 981 being good for over 80mph in 2nd is just a crying shame for road use.
