I'm going to be fitting a riser rail in our bathroom, on the box, it says I should use a masonry drill bit but we have stud/ plasterboard walls with tiles on top.

Do I still need a masonry bit?

Thank you

Just to give a shout out for tile drill bits - http://www.screwfix.com/p/erbauer-tile-glass-drill... - if you are struggling to get through the tiles. - take it slow and cool.

Drilling through tiles ''slow & cool'' is absolutely the way forwards.

You need a bit of pressure to break through the Glazing on the tiles, then just slowly & steadily grind your way through.

If you have never done it before, I would recommend buying some specialist drill bits like the above^

Thank you. I seem to recall that you mark the tile with masking tape to stop the bit slipping???

definitely use tile bits, not masonry. Unless you are practiced masonry bits are likely to skid on the tile surface, even if you use masking tape to locate it.
imho......

These Bosch multi-purpose bits are also good. No need for hammer action on the drill. Also set the plug just passed the tile to stop it expanding on the tile when you put the screw in.

ETA If you are directly on a stud, you wont need the plug. smile

I used those to drill through a glass bottle, was amazed at how well they worked for the price.

Yup, use these regularly for ceramics. Keep dipping it in water as you go.

Alternatively the bosch multis are cracking bits.

If your tiles are ceramic a standard masonry bit will do the job, only use the specialist tile drill bits for porcelain.

Do turn the hammer function on your drill OFF though!
