Live in the South East - Herts

Job I have to be done, I'm looking for a reasonable ball park figure - quote wise

30sqm of Sandstone Patio
Take up existing paving slabs
Usual tiers of prep work
Install Sleeper borders

What kind of price am I looking at?

Ballpark...

Paving supplied and fitted, incl remove and dispose existing @ say £75/m2 - £2,250
Sleepers (supply only) - £11/m, assumed 6x5 regular rectangle laid 3 high, single width - £725
Drainage - say £500

+ labour generally, not in the South East but feels like a week's work for 2 fellas? Say ~£2,200.

@£5,200 ish, assuming broadly level as is - £173/m2?

Just did similar size, most of old slabs anyway removed. Had a wall to remove and replace with fencing. You'll be looking at about 1700 for materials and waste.
Depends on how many working it but give two weeks for the job. 4 to 5k depending on situation and extras that need doing.

I paid around £5k for materials and fitting by a local firm last year. I had Indian Sandstone. Mine required quite allot of prep work, as old tree and roots had to be dug up. I have circa 50sqm in total.

Had it cleaned and sealed only a few weeks back and the guy reckoned it was a pretty good job, given how many bad jobs he had seen in the past few years..

I am also based in South East Herts..

Thanks for the response

So far ive had 2 x 1k labour plus me buying matrierals in addition so around £2.6k.
This was me prepping the sides of the garden where the sleeper borders will go and also taking up the old slabs.

Then another estimate of £3-3.5k which I didn't seem too interested in as I had already had the previous two quote much lower.

Then Saturday I had a local landscaper state £3250 for Kandla Grey and £3600 for Digby Twilight. All in, that includes them prepping (taking up slabs and digging out sides).
Plus sorting out a fence post also.
Its looking more appealing this.

Lastly I'm waiting on another guy whose very busy, 8 week LT. But hes pointed me to some work his team are doing now down at a local pub, it looks superb.
But I'm guessing he maybe more pricey than the guy above.

Its a difficult one as the first guy that visited he was more a Building/Landlord Services company but very very helpful.
Second guy had a large portfolio of jobs hes had done, they all looked good.
He was off Chekatrader with very good feedback as were the last two. First one was off RatedPeople with no reviews but 4.5 stars out of 5 and a fb page which only had a few examples.

Its a minefield to say the least and pricing seems very different.

Very difficult,I had the same dilemma getting my drive done. Everyone quoting on identical Marshalls blocks, lowest quote half of the highest!

Things that put prices up - VAT, having a workforce, advertising, interest in job ie busy or not and other stuff. I went for the guy that didnt have any of those things but was still booked up for 2 months.

I had 45m2 of Indian Sandstone put down about two years ago, rip up and dispose of old crazy paving, the base was part concrete (i.e. minimal prep) but they had to lay a base elsewhere, that came in at £2600 including materials. It's a decent job.

That's a fair shout but then if you don't advertise/list yourself on checkatrader or trustatrader for instance then your work isn't really visible as such, unless you supply a few addresses of recent work. Its swings and roundabouts.

Seems a tad low, what region are you in?

Based in St Albans and the company I used was MC Paving. I dealt with a Jerry Connors. They sourced their materials from St Albans Stone company, where I went down there and picked what I wanted. The prep was very good and the stone slabs are on concrete with hardcore underneath.

Any questions, feel free to PM me..

Thanks G

South East. I bought the slabs for c.£1000 and the labour was £1600.

I see, I spoke to a Jon Connors a last week from a company called Firmcrete. Maybe related.

Ive just googled that company....http://www.hertsad.co.uk/news/st-albans-paving-firm-fined-for-flouting-consumer-laws-1-292410
Hmm

Ive been to St Albans Stone also, that's who Jon Connors directed me to.

Hows the stone held up? Good quality? Any pictures at all.

Yes, I am very happy with it, the stones are good quality. I think dealing with paving companies is always a tricky business, however they turned up when they said they would and worked very hard to get the job done.. Never pay in full until you are 100% satisfied..

Good luck.

That's good to hear then. Happy it turned out well. Very suspicious myself but then that's me and my situation.

I have 2 other companies coming over this week, so lets see what they quote.

I'm sure Jon Connors & his like will be caravan dwellers. Its a common "dwellers" name

Definitely, I'm glad I swerved that one. Checkatrader though has him at Number 3 in my area. All verified.
Questionable.
Mind if you really think about it, accent gives it away straight away.

As mentioned, happy with their service and I think I got a reasonable deal, comparing it against some of my mates locally who paid nearly 25% more!

Not great photos -sorry

For 30sqm id expect around £3,000 - 4,000.

DON'T choose off price alone, request a written quote detailing the foundations clearly. it's dead easy to save £500 by skimping on the depth of MOT/Dot & Dab with the Mortar. Both save time & money very easily and you might never know.....until X years later when you start to have issues.

I'd agree with this.

We had a similar patio laid 6 weeks ago, which cost just over £4k. It wasn't the cheapest quote, but the guy I felt most confident about doing a good job.
