We have recently acquired a nice (if you like purple as much as the missus does anyway!) pair of house numbers made from Portland stone, however I'm not sure of the best way to go about mounting them on the wall.

The fixing holes are circular, approx. 5mm deep and do not go all the way through the block, I don't want to affix them permanently to the wall so adhesives (directly onto the brickwork at least) are out, but obviously I would like them to be secure.

The blocks themselves are 10x10x2cm and fairly weighty and are being mounted on your bog standard housebrick.

I am leaning towards adding some kind of plate to the rear in order to adapt to the standard keyhole style mounting, possibly adding a hook or platform to support the block from underneath. Then plugs and screws in the wall.

I'm open to ideas though.

Glazing silicone. It'll peel off leaving minimal residue if you stick the stone directly to the wall - might need to smash the stone to remove it though. Or you could drill/plug/screw a bit of sheet metal to the wall, then silicone the stone to that.

Put two screws in the wall and hang it on the screws by the holes, maybe with a dab of silicone on each one?
