I need a wall removing between a kitchen and morning room but don't know the order of doing things.
I assume I should go to a structural engineer who will provide details of the rsj required. I can then get quotes from builders to fit it as suggested by structural engineer. Is that right?

I'm fascinated to know how they do this, especially since the recent 'house falling down thread'.

Anyone car to share the key steps?

If it is a semi detached or a terrace then you need to consult your neighbors

Acro props and joists. Props first, then remove wall, then install RSJ, then remove props.

Bit like this only using acros instead of a temp studwork wall.

Get a builder out first, it may not be load bearing, even if it's built from brick or block. I've removed 3 or 4 this year between kitchens and dining rooms and none were load bearing, check what is above and the direction of upper floor joists. You don't need to inform neighbours unless it forms part of a party wall.

Thanks for replies. There is a wall above the one requiring removal and joists above run as if resting on the wall.

Don't necessarily need a structural engineer for a simple removal. We put in our building control application and they came out and said that as long as we used an RSJ of a certain size or larger with a set size of padstones no calculations needed.
