Just bought a property that has a lovely outside table and chair set. Too big to bring in over winter and wonder if it should have some kind of preservative on it. The surface of the timber looks very dry and crusty and I suspect it's been outside for 5 years or more. Any suggestions as to if it needs protected and if it does with what? Thanks in advance. Ian

If it hasn't been treated before, I'd give it a brush or light sanding and a couple of coats of teak oil.

(Don't do this if there are patches of old varnish because it will go blotchy)

NB Is it really oak or weathered teak?

That looks like oak to me (as far as I can tell from the picture). If it is, leave it as it is it doesn't need or benefit from surface treatment.

This. We just put a cover over ours for the winter, and the fil comes and jetwashes it in the spring.
