Hi all,

Long time lurker; lots of discussions about induction vs gas but I am sold on the concept and am getting lost in the plethora of options...have a halogen hob today which is not good at all.

I am constrained to 600mm due to it being in a corner and want multiple / flexible zones and that is about it. I saw the below one from ikea - are they any good vs Bosch / Neff etc?

Price not really an issue and I live in ROI so John Lewis is out...

Thanks for usual PH knowledge 👍

I think that they are now a bit like microwave ovens. The technology is proven & simple, there are very few moving parts and economy of scale manufacturing means that it's ok to buy on price to a large extent.

Induction hobs are awesome - I’ve had them in my last 3 houses and would only go back to gas if i have a split hob of gas and induction.

Only thing you need to be aware of is they may need a larger electrical supply.

My default for these kind of things is Bosch as you can't go wrong generally.
As suggested, ensure you know your availability of electrical supplies. We had an issue where didn't have a dedicated 32A circuit for hob so I managed to get one from bosch which only needed 13A supply. It doesn't have multi zone as we don't see lot of benefit for it especially for 600mm wide...

Thanks all,

Good to know there is not much to choose from and I can always rely on PH!

I have a dedicated supply ~10mm thick cable that seems to run to its own circuit breaker in the fuse box with “400v” on the sealed under-cupboard box and a dedicated switch on the wall so I guess that is more than 13A??? I have zero knowledge about electrics; should have paid more attention in school!

The reason for flexible zones is only really so I can....

Any comments on the IKEA version? Will also go out and have a look in my local electrical shop later on...

Neff hobs have some built in electrickery (think there are 3 settings) that reduces/shares the power. I've not fitted mine yet but I've gone for the belt and braces seperate supply using 10mm cable. I'ts rated as 11kw yikes

the one you link to seems to have direct- access controls which I always recommend, the ones just with +/- buttons are a faff, I'd prefer an old rotary knob rather than the dipdipdipdipdipdipdipdipdipdipdipdipdipdip every time you want to use it.

However thats no been replaced with 'twistpad fire' whatever the hell that means?

Think I'm going for neff myself, if anything to have ovens and hob the same brand.

If you can find another 6mm this one might make the shortlist

That's innovative! I'm not going to show that to SWMBO however as our existing hob is still performing without problem and looks as good as new despite being 10+ years old now.

The twist pad on Neff etc has been around for at least 10 years.

Much better than having to stab at a glass touch 'button'.

They're really not. I fitted one to my flat, and we now have a (much cheaper) one at my girlfriend's flat (fitted by her landlord). Both require a 32A dedicated spur - you can't really just plug them in to a ring main.

The more expensive one is great. Nice controllable power settings, just works for the most part. As with many, you do have to be aware that certain combinations of ring usage will throttle power back, but it is easy enough to work around for the most part.

The cheap one is crap. The power settings just cycle full power on around a 10 second cycle. So if you try to simmer things they stick because the ring does 10s of full blast then 10s off, rather than 20s at half power. In comparison the more expensive one has continuous power down to about half heat and then cycles power, which works much better (as it cycles between half power and off).

Overall power output seems lower on the cheap unit too, with more issues of multiple rings starving each other of power.

I'd say a good unit is the equal of gas, but a cheap unit is just terrible.

Really? I have a Siemens and cannot recollect ever having an issue with just buttons. That dial thing just adds clutter, imho.

We stayed in a place over Christmas with the generic touch button Neff. Rubbish. Takes ages to set it going, then if you move a hot pan anywhere near the controls, the whole thing shuts down. Dials FTW.

IKEA one here. Rectangular and has the powershare thing. Does the job, and has been for a few years.

I’ve had 3 Neff hobs, one in each of my last three houses, al with differing controls. They all work great imo and never had issues with any.
