We live in a cold house, so my 23 year old daughter has a 2kw fan heater to take the edge off her bedroom when necessary. Today she went to work at 10:00am and I came home at 7:00pm to find it on, so I'm not a happy daddy. We don't have a smart meter (albeit I did request one and have been told by Scottish Power they will fit one for us...within the next 2 years!), so I've no idea how much today's mistake has cost. Any ideas? Apart from planning to tell her the house could have burnt down, I'd like to tell her the cost!

Just look at your last bill and see how much a KW/H is on your tariff and multiply it by 18.

At a guess, just under £3.

18kwh? Maybe £3 if you're on a particularly rubbish tariff.

Remortgage.

Enjoy your toasty house.

We had guests over once. Unknown how she did it but she managed to leave the hot tap on overnight, walked into the bathroom in the morning and it was like an steam room. Would love to know how much it would cost to run a hot tap for ten hours.

Personally I'd be more worried about it being a fire risk!

Maybe less if the heater's got a thermostat.

Well fk my old boots. I thought it was going to be £25! I was only going to use the cost to stress the point. I might still tell her it was £25!
Fire was my real concern as these old houses go up very nicely.

South East Water left my garden hose running for 4 days once. Best part of 70,000 litres through my meter and onto my grass. Worked out the cost and it was only about £30! Grass looked good.

Its probably less as once the room was toasty the thermostat would kick in and only cycle the heater to maintain the temp, but if you can keep a straight face tell her the house birnt to the ground and the fire brigade reckon something electrical was left switched on, see how long it takes for the penny to drop and if she opens her mouth.

Get an oil filled radiator with a thermostat. Safer and cheaper.

Sell the fan heater on Gumtree or whatever. And buy a ceramic heater. Much (much) safer.

I ran up a £300 electric bill with one of those when I was a student in the '90s

... but it was ok 'cos the bill was in the landlords name and we did a runner at the end of term without leaving a forwarding address.

We've left the hob on over night before, can't say ever noticed a cost difference doing so, but once a week one of us will get up to double check...

Its what you do regularly that matters....a one off mistake is a few quid....if she did that every day, its £90 a month or an extra £270 in leccy on your quarterly bill....thats worth charging her for LOL smile

a bit like when the missus wants a tumble dryer, promises its a winter or "when its raining thing"....then you never see washing on the line ever again and the electric bill has gone up £40 a month........

My wife put the kettle on without its lid the other day. Not an electric kettle - a normal one that we use on a gas stove.

I said to her,'that is a bit dangerous'.

She went out and forgot about the kettle.

A bit later on I smelled smoke, went to the kitchen and the thing was on fire! Flames reached up to the smoke hood. Damn nearly set the apartment ablaze.

Unless it was a long time ago that's too low. It's 70 cu metres and the combined price of water supply and waste water is around £3 per cu metre now.

If she is genuinely cold get her a small 800w Oil filled radiator, cost around £25......100% safe and costs now't to run.

Great for taking the chill off.
