Too Early???

Glorious weather for mid Feb and all the windows have been open today - heating is due to come on at 4pm and I’m debating if I can skip the evening cycle……

Personally I don’t think winter is done with us yet and our house when it cools stays cold so I may have to reconsider biggrin

I've been turning the heating off and then back on again for the last couple of weeks. Come back on again when it's a bit nippy in the morning.

Currently it's off.

I didn't think people turned it on and off anymore?

Thermostat set to 21 all year, heating turns its self on and off when it needs to.

Mine is set to 12c and it's not been clicking on lately so it must be a heatwave.

My thermostat is set as standard to 15 degrees, if I feel chilly may push it up to 17. my house is particularly well insulated thankfully so the heating doesn't come on that much.

Because its not an absolute science and we don't all have money to burn.

Oh we do - most parts of the house have Economy 7 night storage heaters and we tend to manually turn them off. Not all at the same time though. We haven’t let the current mild spell lull us into a false sense of Spring.

I'm quite happy for the temperature of the house to drift down most of the time. Some days I don't tolerate the lack of warmth as well as others hence the manual intervention.

Standard PH response, combining aggression, 'ad hominem' and complete lack of constructive comment. As well as a total lack of understanding of how thermostats work.

I think you are taking PH too seriously

Whilst scientifically 21 degrees is 21 degrees our psychology about the time of year, how bright it is outside etc all affect how we feel. So it is not always the case that I would want the heating to be on at 20degrees if its sunny outside and I don't 'feel' as cold.

Only if you want to burn money.

When I got up this morning the sun was out house felt fine even though it was cold enough to trigger the heating, so I turned it off knowing that the house would get warmer on it's own.

As its been a bright sunny day we've not needed to use the boost button at all, and the temperature hasn't dropped in the house all day.

On a typical day we use between £5 and £7 so thats been saved today.

Thermostats measure air temperature alone but humans perceive temperature differently, so its not always as simple as a fixed temperature on the thermostat.

Exactly. Same with RH, cold walls, air current etc. Thermostats MEASURE temperature, but humans FEEL temperature. That's why on a cold day weather forecasters give the actual temperature and then what it feels like due to wind chill.

If money isn't an issue then yes setting it to 21 and ignoring the cost will be fine, but you will using more energy than you need to. If money is an issue then you can save a lot just by compensating for weather. Its just applying a bit of IF THEN ELSE logic and some smart systems do this for you.

Nope. Our kids are running in and out of the house all afternoon leaving the doors open. So in this scenario I’d be hearing the garden.

In reply to the OP no it’s staying on for a couple of weeks yet.

If you get a modern boiler with a thermostat control then you don’t need to mess about turning it off or on, it’s all automated. If it gets below a certain temperature the heating comes on, it then goes off when that temperature has been reached. Time of year doesn’t matter, sometimes you get cold snaps in warm months.

They’ve been around for some years and are very useful.

Agreed. And sometimes, cos the sun is out, the air is dry and you're going to be out all afternoon, it's a good time to open the windows and get a load of fresh air through the house, and that might result in the house dropping below the stat temperature.
