Recommend me a washing machine...

I don't need anything that does too much smart stuff like use an app on my phone (WTF that's actually a thing?!).
It just needs to wash well and work.
Counterpoint I thought wifi & apps on a w/m would be pointless but my Landlady got a new Hoover (very noisy!) w/m in to the property so I immediately set up & connected with the app (a bit of a faff tbh!).It just needs to wash well and work.
With the app there are many more programmes available & much more customisation. The main programme I use is a Daily 60 minute wash to which I have added 2 extra rinses & saved the programme to favourites. So now i just dump the clothes & gel in to the w/m & select the programme within favourites in the app & away it goes.
You can monitor the wash on the app to see when it finishes & it will alert you. When finished it asks if you want to start a slow gentle tumbling programme to avoid creasing which I find handy if I'm out at the shops or whatever. From the app I can also see if it's being used by anyone else so I don't waste time thinking I can go use it

Fair enough but it's not something I need I just need a washing machine that will wash well and that won't break With the app there are many more programmes available & much more customisation. As with everything each manufacturer seems to make about 20 different models with minimal obvious difference between them
So starter for ten what would this NOT do?

I bought one about 6 months ago. Washes fine but to answer your question, it doesn't have a timer for delayed washing - I used to use our last one to have the washing finished when I got up in the morning, nor does it have a rinse only programme - to rinse after a handwash for example. It does have a delayed start function and rinse only assuming you are referring to the unit in the link above. It might be buried in one of the machines sub menus.

Ie, custom 1, 2, 3… and set each phase as you want it… should be easy if the washer can take those commands via an app.
They likely prefer this because they can have the machine pretty dumb and dump all the software on an app… but means you’ll be screwed when your old phone no longer works with latest app… or machine no longer works with latest phone and app, leaving you with less functionality than the boggo non-smart models in 5 years time.

Thanks I must be very boring as I don't run the washing machine when I'm not around and awake "just in case" Genuine question how much have these things moved on?
And are Miele over-hyped or still sensible if you want to buy once and (hopefully unless you get a bad one) be done with it for a long long time?
We have a Miele and in my opinion, yes, they're overhyped and not really very good. Admittedly we live in a hard water area without a softener, but everything need at least one additional rinse, after a program that already had 'water plus' selected, otherwise there's detergent residue on dark clothes.
Also, very early on, it tripped the power due to a known issue with the heater component.
We previously had a very reasonably priced LG which was excellent in every respect. Well, other than the tune it played when the washing was done.

Have you adjusted your machine to take account of the water hardness? Which model is it - a TwinDos one? Also, very early on, it tripped the power due to a known issue with the heater component.

Question, why do you need two extra rinses? Seems a bit excessive, put machine can do an 'extra rinse' which I only use very rarely and basically only for reusable nappies. The only thing I would like our machine to do is a " Mini 30' " wash with a 1400rpm spin, even if it took 45mins. I wouldn't use it often as I almost always use the standard 2h wash and just avoid putting clothes in if they don't really need a wash yet. Plus the line/airer to dry.
However if I am in a rush for something, it feels really counter intuitive for the quick half hour wash to only be a 700rpm spin as all the time saved on the spin is lost in drying time.
First world issues!

Cheapest possible. Be prepared to replace often. Or not.
My £230 Indesit from John Lewis has done 10+ years. I maintain that if it gets past the warranty period, it's going to have a long and happy life.
Why people spend thousands on a machine which fundamentally does the same thing is beyond me.

Had a high end LG for over ten years. Replaced it and the tumble drier with a new one 2 years ago and gave the old one to the MIL (she used to do housework for us and loved it). Only replaced it because we had a kitchen and utility extension built and Wifey wanted a colour change lol.

Multiple reasons. Compare a £250 generic "branded" machine (Beko, Hotpoint, Electrolux etc, it will be the same machine behind the front cover) to a £1250 Miele or similar. My £230 Indesit from John Lewis has done 10+ years. The more expensive machine will be:
More energy efficient and cheaper to run
More water efficient and cheaper to run
Will be quieter
Will have less vibrations
Will have a higher spin speed, meaning drier clothes and more efficient if you use a powered dryer.
Will have more programmes so clothes clean better and greater option of fabrics
It may have features like TwinDos where you load bottles of detergent into the machine, which is more convenient and as the machine alters the amount of detergent based on the programme and the load, gives better results and is cheaper to run.
Adjustability of water hardness giving better washing results and efficiency
Turning the beeping off!
Delayed start timer
Finish timer (tell the machine when you want the programme to end and it will adjust the start time based on programme and load) which is useful if you for example have an economy 7 meter, you can set the machine to finish at 7.30am, so it runs during off-peak and finishes right at the end of the cycle, minimising the amount of time the washing sits in the machine before you remove it.
Other features like "Extra Quiet" and Washing Assistant (you tell the machine what you are washing (clothing, fabric, colour, level of dirt etc) and the machine selects and adjusts the most appropriate programme.
App with full control of machine and notifications (can set machine to automatically order more detergent when it is running low for example) amongst features.
Both machines work.....but one of them will work better, will be more efficient, quieter, cheaper to run, more convenient and with more features. Reliability would be a conversation to have in 20years
