Why are the cycles so long now? Surely wears the clothes out more.
They're supposed to use less energy due to just sitting there doing nothing a lot of the time. Can't say I've ever watched a cycle so I don't know if that's true or not.

It will depend on the machine.

Our Samsung has a "Daily Wash" program that's about 1 hour. It also has a "15 Minute" program which is obviously 15 minutes.

Every program can then be manually altered to add or subtract temperature, rinses, spin speed etc which also changes the estimated time displayed.

Oh right, so the bulk of the added time is soaking? Maybe.

I think modern day wash cycles seems o be geared towards lower temperature washes to save energy. The washing powder / liquid adverts seem to be pushing this. The trade-off seems to be longer wash cycles. It's no big deal for us as ours run at night.

Yeah, we almost always run ours overnight, often at 30deg with Ecover liquid. Although we used 40 or 50deg for the nappies, with Fairy powder

Partly so we don't have to listen to it, partly as its greener even if on a flat rate tariff, partly as hanging it up in the morning suits us and outdoor drying.

Crikey.

The biggest thing I'm learning is that they don't make em like they used to!
Bosch certainly doesn't. I fitted new brushes to our previous Bosch which started spinning more slowly and then expired (I noted at the time that the door was bolted into a solid aluminium casting) and it was back to as new performance at over 20yrs old! The one included in our new house seemed to have a wobbly insecure door - the main hinges were secured with self tappers through a thin metal panel and the holes had enlarged in use so I pulled the door seal and secured properly with nuts, bolts and locking washers.

Build quality across the board seems poor these days.

If I was in control of the world I would certainly start looking at enforcing minimum warranty periods on all of this sort of thing.

Given them a deadline that in say 2-3 years time, gotta give a minimum transferable warranty of 10 years or 2600 washes for all domestic machines.
All parts and labour callout free etc over that time period included, plus 10% of the purchase price as compensation per breakdown after the first breakdown.
Spare parts have to remain available for a minimum of 25 years, with cost limits such that motor/pcb/drumassy capped at 50% of purchase price.
That sort of thing.

Obviously it would increase the cost of the initial purchase, but it would also likely decrease the total cost of ownership, while providing a more stable market for used machines, which would become a safe go to route for those on a budget etc.

Considering our need to curb consumption and emissions, it appears bonkers not to address the issue.

This was the machine we bought. Seems very fussy.

I thought it was a relatively basic "good" one, but even that's "too smart".

Thanks for the input all. Looks like I'll be looking for another BEKO...
We've got that exact same Bosch downstairs in the kitchen and have for 18 months and our experience couldn't be more different. Other than it occasionally not starting as it thinks the door isn't closed (closing it again usually works) and the many beeps it's been a great bit of kit. Quiet, does loads of washing in 45 minutes (press the "Speed Perfect" button as previously said) and we haven't had the out of balance thing no matter what we've thrown in it.

We've had 2 Siemens washing machines and 1 Miele

1st Siemens lasted about 8 years before giving up the ghost
2nd Siemens lasted 5 years with numerous warranty repairs including all the electronics twice, motor and pump

Current machine is a Miele, it's been going strong for 13 years now without one issue whatsoever. It weighs a tonne though........

I bought a beko for £275 via the ao outlet on eBay.
It’s an 8kg machine. Had it for a year and it’s been a perfectly adequate washing machine. Ok my neighbours aren’t going to be impressed.

Not sure if this is really acceptable or not.

Bought this LG washer dryer in 2017 for £900. Fast forward to last week where I found the door seal had effectively crisped up where the dryer vent enters the drum.

£50 seal and a bunch of swearing on the door seal clamp (because I didn’t buy the right tool) and all is good.

I've found what looks to be a NOS Miele washing machine from probably about the same time period. Possibly 10yrs old. New ones are too deep to go in the space because of a 50mm sink drain but the older one would fit.

Its strong money though for an old machine, but it is unused. I am tempted. Looks simple enough before they all got too complex. It's also a smidge over 100kgs!

Another vote for Samsung, we have the add wash model.
I like the fact it lets you know when due a clean.
Mrs overloads it, large floor mats, trainers & it’s still spotless inside.
Not many days a month it gets a rest.
The previous Siemens & Bosch models were shot after four years & seals etc were towards the end spotted black.

For balance
3 Years + 8 months-Samsung is dead. Under warranty however they've cancelled the repair booking twice due to parts not arriving.

Thanks for that!

Think were going to go for this one https://www.bosch-home.co.uk/product-list/washers-... - it is 71dB which earns it a 'Quiet Mark' and is A-Rated.

And you get a year's worth of Persil and a 5-year warranty!
Arrived today. Incredibly quiet motor - so much better than the Samsung

Update from me.

Argos came and collected the Bosch today and issued a refund.

Last night I went with a pal to collect the NOS Miele that was for sale locally. Turns out it was in a display kitchen of a showroom and then put into storage, hence new but old.

It's a smidge over 100kg and built like a bank vault. Spins at 1600 and it nearly silent. From what I can make out the model came out in about 2007 but can't find when it was made until. It's model number is W3922.

The longest was cycle is less than 2hrs.

So far very happy. Yes, it did cost more than a BN Bosch (500 Vs 430), but I'm very pleased so far as it just works.

Nice, sounds like a good find.

Some timing for a thread like this. rolleyes

The senior laundry engineer is making complaints about a 6 year old Hoover machine.

My head is , erm, spinning.

Given that I own 2 Samsung TVs and a Samsung fridge, I'm not seeing any significant warning here or in reviews not to add to the Samsung stable at this stage.

Just a case of which one and who does this best deal now.....

Until I see Haier, nobody talks about them at all? They seem to achieve decent capacity from small depth footprint which is attractive.
