Coal chute fan
Discussion
Ive uncovered a hidden coal cellar behind the wine rack in the larder of a house im selling.
Its pretty damp, id like to increase air movement, should i install a fan in the coal chute? If so what type?
Another option is to put an exterior wall vent on the other side of the larder so there is air vents both sides (Or near as damn it) the whole space.
There is ventilation (Airbrick) at the top of the coal chute

How large is the coal cellar? And scope/merit to converting to wine cellar?
Depending on where the house isn’t might add value.
That’s what we did with our coal cellar (we have an office in the main cellar) - it’s got a 288 bottle wine rack and a chest freezer in it. Depending on where the house isn’t might add value.
I've got a coal hole adjoining my (semi-basement) kitchen. There's a fancy wrought iron lid over it which is reversible and the side which I've got facing down has a big iron hook on it, for lifting it presumably. It's next to the main entrance to the house, up a flight of steps, so not easy for the coal man to access with a sack full of coal on his back.
Sadly it lets in a lot of rain, so I don't think it would work as a wine cellar. I've tried sealing it, but the walls need ventilation, so i abandoned that idea. There's still some coal left in the cellar, along with umpteen half-used tins of paint.
I'll miss the odd quirks of this house when I move.
