We want a basic lock on our bathroom door, something simple and something we can barge down if the kids lock themselves inside (again), maybe just a lever that flips over and sits in a cradle like you find on some public toilets, or a simple turn-knob that pushes into a slot. Would consider a standard bolt-slider if there's not really anything else.

Probably all mounted on the outside of the door and frame - if there's something that involves drilling a couple of normal sized holes then I'd think about that, but I'm not going to be hollowing out the edge of the door to fit a proper locking mechanism.

Any suggestions?

PEDO! (sic)

How about a short throw small slide bolt? Sounds like you want as little damage as possible when (if) forcing the door, so you want as few fixings in place with as short screws as possible. Maybe consider mounting it on a piece of wood then on the door, so the sacrificial bit is the piece of wood with short screws in.

What kind of handle is on there at the moment ?

Wouldn't something like a simple privacy door handle work (without a mortice). You can open them from outside easily with a screwdriver or 2p piece.

Yeah that’s the functionality, the hook might be suitable but the bolt is maybe a bit agricultural. Will have a browse in those categories to see what else there is.

Current handle/lock is probably decades old and welded on with coats of gloss such that the screw heads have probably dissolved, really don’t want to try to take that out. It did have a lock but after a 2 year old locked himself in and we didn’t even know if he could get himself back out again we glued it open, would have taken the fire brigade to break the door down!

How about this type? Designed to be opened from the outside in an emergency.

The one I fitted needed a bit of TLC to get to be smooth in operation by striping it down and reassembling so if you're not into that maybe look for a more quality version.

Haha that’s ideal actually! How big was the drill hole through the door?

Why not? It’s not difficult with a few basic tools. Don’t forget most doors are hollow anyway so it’s only a bit of pine to drill through and chop out with a chisel.

Great, I'll find something similar if you're not too confident about that mechanism. Mrs Hill will love the 'engaged' sign, some days I doubt she'll venture out again!

Bought this recently, looks ok and works well. It would make a mess of the woodwork if you had to bust the door down though.

We have one of these on our bathroom door, wouldn’t take much to force.

Bought basically the same as this - did you pack out the spindle slot before you fitted it? If so, what with? The mechanism is sound but the spindle is slightly loose in its slots so it’s not a solid turn which would bug me I think.

My low-tech mind is saying stuff the ends with Blutack. smile
