I had a monster ivy that had grown through a wall, so I couldn't just drag it out. I got a long drill bit, the sort they use for cutting holes for locks (30mm) and drilled in at 45 degrees all around the trunk then fillied it with sodium chlorate weedkiller and sealed the holes with dirt and shavings. Dead as that squirrel.

I think there is something seriously wrong with me.

Personally anyone killing a perfectly good tree is a tosspot!!!

What is you plant a couple to replace it, is that ok

I'd ask the original tree that question. Besides planting 2 new uns doesn't guarantee any survival to maturity. Some tosser will no doubt want to make another driveway, doh! People round here have hacked down nearly all of the mature trees planted by the victorians. I don't see anything being planted that stands any chance of lasting for 100 years.

I'd never contemplate removing a tree for a p*****g car!

Whenever we needed to, ahem, whack a tree, we would use one of these:

Ran into an incident where we were cutting down a sick tree, but didn't realize it was intertwined with another tree... so when the first came down, the second came down... thus bringing down a third that was intertwined with the first two. We do have a nice little clearing at the bottom of the embankment behind our house, though.

I agree - cutting down mature trees just to park a car is a bit extreme. How long do you think it's been there?

Just get rid. All these tossers whining about trees FFS if I own a house and a tree is stopping me from getting in to the garden the bugger is going. Sodding tree huggers get a life FFS we are talking cars here hours of blood and sweat to make sutomotive perfection.

If you have a Ginko tree then your attitude towards killing it would be a little more callous.

They bear 'fruit' which is gold in colour and about the size of a cherry. Only problem is that when the skin breaks the stench is similar to dog faeces.

I have one on the ground in front of my house that belongs to the city, so it's their tree but I am obligated to sweep leaves and clear up the mess. I did ask if I could have it removed and pay for something nicer - and was referred to a local by-law that fines me if I damage a tree of theirs.

So anyway, if the diameter of say a Maple tree was 18", how many copper nails would you need, what size and diameter, and could you put them in the main roots?

Mate, you've been here 5 minutes and are trolling already, you're a bit shallow really! YOU need to get a life, sad muppet that you clearly are. I like cars but they are like plastic in the overall scheme of things. Here today and well gone tomorrow and that includes any car I'm likely to own. A tree in my garden would come before my car, period! In fact, I'd have the common sense to buy a house with vehicular access or off road parking.

A tree is just a plant. If its in the way chop it down, but make sure you put a couple up to replace it.

Erm Mate I have been here for 4 years. If expressing my opinion is trolling then I am guilty as charged. I obviously have a different set of values than you and guess what? I think my values are deep, meaningful and the best set of values around, just like you do. The human effort that goes into producing a motor car is immense and in my opinion far more important than a tree which lets face it can be planted in seconds with no real skill or knowlege. I am glad to see you have the sense to buy a house with vehicular access, thats great, but not everyone has your vision. So far you have said "I would put a tree before a p*****g car" or close to and "I like cars but they are like plastic in the overall scheme of things". We are all capable of contradicting ourselves and we can all be obfusk but these 2 statements are clearly at odds with one another. Do you really like cars? Or are you just kidding yourself? I like trees but am realistic enough to know that you dont allow your 50k pride and joy to sit out on the street getting vandalised and covered in leaves because a tree needs shifting. My time, my effort and the efforts of my fellow man are far more important than a few trees.

I've been 'told' that the easiest way is to saturate the roots with salt.

Mix a pound of salt into a bucket of hot water (preferably boiling) and then pour it at the base of the trunk once a week for at least two months.

The fecker will die at the roots so you don't need to get a stump grinder in to deal with the remains - cheap as chips.

Still can't understand why my apple trees fell over a couple of weeks ago though

Ther eis a product called 'Rootout' you can get it at the garden centre. It is designed for killing tree stumps. But if you drill a hole (1/2 inch) and reguarly stuff in some of the crystles then it will soom die.

This is what Layandii abuse freedom fighters use, as it hard to trace. Chainsaw marks get you sent to prison ;-)
