Better you call out TRANSCO for them to check it than us read in The Sun.....Muppet(45) was posting on the internet that he could SMELL GAS, unfortunately for him he ignored EVERYBODY that posted that he should call TRANSCO minutes before his house was DEMOLISHED by a lightswitch spark that ignited the gas that was escaping from an underground leak and exiting in his front room. Sadly this member of 'Pistonheads' who was renovating his home is unavailable for comment
Last cold spell we had the central heating stuck on, and the house reached 29C! I was away working, so wifey called the gas breakdown people, who told her to turn off the gas at the meter and open all the windows and doors whilst waiting for a service guy to appear sometime that day.

Great, an old lady, a young child, and my wife, in a house fully exposed to the -7C winter airs......

Gas man came, checked the gas was off, told them he'd be back four days later to have a look, but leave the heating off until then.

My dad stepped in at that point and tore them a new one, and it was fixed the next day. biggrin

Do you know what gas (or at least the additives combination they put in to make it smell) smells like?

I wouldn't describe it as acrid - I'd have said it's more a sickly rotten egg type of smell. Most people find it stomach churning (which is the idea).

We get a really strong gas smell in our living room, especially, but not always, when it's windy outside? We've had Transco out three or four times but they never find anything wrong.Half the time we're sitting here with headaches and generally feeling crap but what can we do,move?rolleyes
If you get this while the gas fire is on it could be carbon monoxide?

A dead rat or mouse under the floor when decaying smells very much like gas.

Yep, I've come to the conclusion that it is not gas. It simply hasn't got that sickly rotten egg smell.

It really is difficult to describe the smell but it is certainly unpleasant and rather worrying. It can also come and go very quickly which surely would eliminate the potential for an animal, such as a bird, that has died and is rotting within the chimney somewhere?!

The only other thing worth mentioning is that we have just had our parquet (spl?) flooring refurbished / sanded and I did not notice the smell prior to this. Not sure how it could be connected however and again, why would the presence of the smell be so erratic.

Oh well, the pondering continues..
